A NEW YEAR
LORI
December 30, 2009
Happy New Year (a couple days early)....
What an exciting 2009 it was for Len Druskin. We opened 2 new stores in downtown Minneapolis, and it wouldn’t have been possible
without you, our valued customers.
We are excited to kick off 2010 with a special promotion
at LEN City Center and Len Druskin Outlet at Southdale.
We’ll be giving away $250 Len Druskin gift certificates.
To enter, just spend at least $25 before 1pm.
There will be drawings at 11am, Noon and 1pm, so the earlier you shop, the more you spend, the more chances to win.
In addition to all the new arrivals and deeper discounts
at Len City Center and the Outlet, we’ve also got a lot of new merchandise at the Galleria, LD•Len Druskin and Len Druskin Man.
If you’ve got warm winter getaways planned, you’ll find a growing selection of cruise wear at all stores and swimwear at the Galleria.
We’re looking forward to another year of great fashion, fun and friends!
Cheers,
Lori
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
LORI
December 04, 2009
Hello Len Druskin Shoppers,
I’m changing the name of this blog to “Live with Lori”—just for awhile.
With 2 new stores opening in one month, I'm sure you can understand
why Michael, (my brother) hasn't been blogging!
Michael is responsible for the merchandise in ALL 5 stores, and I
don't know how he does it!
He’s been working around the clock-literally, to make sure that when
you come into one of our stores, you’ll find what you are looking for.
If there’s something you’ve been searching for and you can’t find it,
trust me, he wants to know, send us an email using the “contact us”
portion of the website. The emails come to me and I forward them to
Michael.
We hope you’ll find the opportunity to visit one of our new stores.
Our new women's boutique, LD•Len Druskin on the skyway level of
Gaviidae next to Neiman Marcus, and our new outlet concept, LEN at
City Center. LEN is on the skyway across from Brooks Brothers.
We’d love to hear about your experience at any of our stores.
Wishing everyone a happy holiday season!
Until next time,
Cheers,
Lori
BIG NEWS
MICHAEL
September 25, 2009
It's been a while since I have written in. I guess if you are on the website I probably don't have to tell you that. I was actually considering eliminating the blog from the website as its going to be undergoing a bit of a redesign soon. I was convinced however, that a bit of dialogue with the outside world might be good for my sanity. Let's face it, work a bit too much so at least it's a bit outside the scope of normal industry banter. Back to the title of today's blog. The big news, which some of you may have heard through the rumor mill, is that Len Druskin is adding two more stores Downtown this fall. LD Len Druskin, our new women's boutique in the city, will open during mid October in Gaviidae II next to Neiman Marcus. Not a bad company to share a wall with right? In addition, our new Len store will open on the skyway level of City Center in early November. Both stores join Len Druskin Man which just started it's third year in Gaviidae I next to Sak's Off Fifth on the skyway level. These three stores will enable us to give our Downtown customers their own complete Len Druskin experience. We are excited to be a bigger part of the Downtown community. What is Len you might ask? I guess I'll save that for tomorrow's entry. I am in NY this week for market. Off to dinner. This won't post till Fri am for those of you wondering why I would be eating dinner at 8am. Till Later, M
IT'S ABOUT TIME
MICHAEL
July 17, 2009
I know, what happened to the regular blogging? I guess I just fell into a log jam for a bit, nothing more, nothing less. Seemed like there has just been a lot going on in my world and I am sure most of yours. We've been working really hard getting ready for fall and winter while trying to make sure the stores have plenty of great warm weather wear still available. After today, I am not sure how big of a concern that might be anymore (lol). I'm back on my workout regimine which somehow encour ages me to blog. Maybe it's the time I have while working out to think a bit about what I want to write about. As many of you know from your own personal experiences, it's sort of a mental break. For me, it stimulates my creative side I guess, that is if you call this creative. In any case, I'm back. I am en route to Miami this evening for the swim show. Working on our resort wear for the coming winter. It will be our third year with beachwear so hopefully I have learned from the feedback we have go tten and this should be our best selection to date. Miami is a bit hot this time of year and humid so don't know how much poolside rest I will squeeze in, but should fine time to blog nonetheless. Till Later, M
MEMORIAL DAY
MICHAEL
May 24, 2009
All our stores will be open Memorial Day. Galleria Len Druskin and Southdale Len Druskin Outlet open 11-5 and Gaviidae Common Len Druskin Man open 12-5. We thank and take time tomorrow to remember all those that served our nation. Till Later, M
CENSUS
MICHAEL
March 22, 2009
First of all I have almost forgotten the syntax I am supposed to use to start the blog and put the "gears in motion," so to speak. It has really been a long time since I have written in. I would say the last few weeks I have encountered some pretty long work days. I was hoping for a bit of decompression time on the plane tonight but have not had too much luck so far. I was randomly picked for the US Census so had to take some time and fill out the census form tonight on the plane. It looked worse than it was. I now have had it driven into my head that I can be referred to heretofore as "Person 1.". It's like jury duty, it's one of those things we do for our country. Compared to the sacrifices so many make for our country, I guess I should not be lamenting about 20 minutes for a census form. I am prepping for our women's fall markets as I am en route to Los Angeles and then onto Chicago and New York. We are working hard to find great things for each store. We are wrapping up men's fall m arket and are happy with the results. We are just starting womens and have a long list of feedback from last fall and from recent weeks to guide us. We have a commitment to you to always offer the best quality merchandise and service possible. We continue to seek out a variety of products and price points so that each trip to one of our stores can be fun and interesting. I am excited to tell you about some of our finds over the coming months. Some of them are just wearable, well priced, and the kinds of things you wear and love. We will continue to balance fashion and practicality we create our unique inventory moving forward. Many of you have commented that you are pleased with the resort and spring selections you have been seeing so keep coming back as the rest of spring and summer is arriving daily at all three stores. Thanks for your continued support. Till Later (or another flight-lol), M
TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING
MICHAEL
February 15, 2009
Ok, I will admit it, I have not been a great member of the blogging community the last few weeks. I think some if it comes from how much time I have been spending on emails this year so far. As a purchaser of goods and services, much the same as many of you, I think it is great to be able to go online and do some of my business. I also like the ability to communicate through email without having to always disturb someone or having to send something in the mail. I realize texting is now the comm unication of choice by many or even facebook. (By the way, although I am now on facebook, I have not set up much on my account as of yet. I still have not determined whether I am staying or not. It just seems like it will take a lot of time I don't have at the moment). Email is the preferred way to communicate in our vendor/retailer world so that is what we use for now. The problem is that what used to be an email system used to communicate necessary information has become a way to bombard with unwante d information. Why is it the people who I do business with rarely contact me but every other person or company out there seems to bombard me with reminders everyday of how wonderful their products are. To some extent, the more they email and tout themselves, the less interesting the product becomes to me. Like the rest of you, it is more fun and more special to find new things and discover new products. Although I open and respond to just about every personally written email, it is really becoming a f ull time job. 300 to 400 some days come in. Is it really prudent to send that many emails. At Len Druskin you will receive email from us only sporadically as we believe it is only important to contact you when we have something important to tell you about. Hopefully you will agree that we do not abuse the privilege of having your email address in our system. I only wish more companies took the time to consider the impact of over emailing. In my opinion it's neither time efficient for either party, nor a particularly strong way to build a relationship with your customer. We don't want to take the fun out of shopping so you still have to come in to our stores to see what is going on and what we are stocking. Come in and make a discovery. Isn't that one of life's best experiences? I think I have segwayed far from the topic of my lack of blogging but I have been mentally exhausted from trying to respond to all the emails pouring in to our server from vendors and others trying to sell their wares. I ho pe to come up with a solution for myself soon so that I can spend my energy on any given day writing this rather than telling someone that I know where to find them if I am suddenly interested in their product or service. I, for one, like to find stuff on my own. The thrill of discovery is part of my nature. Guess maybe my next vacation should be to a more exotic spot than usual. (That is when I get a vacation-lol). Enjoy the discoveries in our stores this season. We promise to keep them under wraps ti ll you find them. Off to Las Vegas today to look for other new lines and products. Till Later, M
A LONG AND COLD JANUARY
MICHAEL
January 25, 2009
It has been a long a bitterly cold January. I should have nothing to complain about, however, as I have spent the better part of the month at markets where is has been much warmer. Even got some 90 degree plus days in Los Angeles the week before last. Not only has this January been unusual weatherwise, but as we all know, it has been historic in other ways. I have been working feverishly on finding things that are fun, wearable, and a bit unique. We are committed as always to offering great q uality products, superior service, and a positive, fun experince in our stores. You will not see us cutting our service or selection. Rather, while maintaining the same level of service you are accustomed to in our stores, you will begin to see product enhancements throughout the spring season. From and expanded swim and beach selection for women and men, to a greatly enlarged accessories assortment, to new designer lines, to new less expensive small brand offering great value. I hope you really like what we are doing. I continue to source new and fun lines each week and am working with our vendors to offer you the best price we can everyday. Over the coming months I welcome your feedback on these product enhancements and expansions. I hope you like what you will see over the coming months. One thing is for sure, you won't leave saying same old, same old. Meanwhile, off to NY to begin shopping Fall and Winter 09. No rest at the moment. Sorry for the lapse in blogging. It's been a crazy month . Till Later, M
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
MICHAEL
December 24, 2008
Wanted to take a minute and wish all of you a happy holiday season and a happy new year. Although this year has been a bit sobering in many ways as a country, we all look forward to a new year and can be grateful for our family, friends, collegues, and all the other great people that we cross paths with on a day to day basis. We are grateful to have so many great customers, employees, vendors and business associates. We are excited by what we have planned in 2009. We are committed to contiuin g to bring you the best apparel, accessories, and footwear in all our stores as well as great beachwear for the coming vacation season. We thank all of you for your support and friendship and look forward to a new year with all of you. Stay warm and happy holidays. Till Later, M
VACATION TIME?
MICHAEL
December 11, 2008
Since the snow has started to fall and temperatures are dipping, we know many of you are now thinking about a warm weather vacation. I did get to esxape to LA today so got a bit of sunshine myself. Have to admit is was nice. Even got a homemade meatloaf sandwich as what is definately one of the best lunch spots in downtown LA, Gram and Papa's. Located on 9th street in the Fashion District of downtown LA, its definately an unexpected twist to the usual McDonalds and Subway fare in the area. F or anyone who we will be in Downtown Los Angeles at lunchtime, check it out. Anyway, aside from the usual food segway, all three stores are receiving lot's of new spring merchandise from men's and women's swim, to shorts and tees, to flip flops, to easy women's dresses perfect for a warm weather holiday. We still have some stuff to keep you warm as well or take you to that holiday gathering. As always, for the giftgiver, we have complimentary gift wrap at our Galleria and Gaviidae stores and the Len Dr uskin gift card available to purchase and redeem at all three stores. We hope to see you soon in one of our stores as we continue our commitment to you in offering the best service, selection, and shopping experience available. Thanks as always for your support. And yes, as usual I am writing from the airplane. Is there any other place to write from? Its pretty funny how amazed some people are that I write this from a blackberry. Its really so fast once your hands get used to the keyboard. Good thi nk they don't bill me by word. By the way, I am still not sure how I feel about Leno moving out of late night. Are we ready for him at 9pm. Guess they felt the central time zone wasn't their greatest concern. Hope this isn't another Katie Couric move. Sometimes things are best left as they are. Change is good but somethings are best left alone. I will have to see what format his show is in to truly judge. We'll have to wait and see. Till Later, M
ROCK BAND
MICHAEL
December 01, 2008
I had my first experience with "Rock Band" last night. I am sure to many of you its old news, but I seem to have somehow missed the Rock Band themed parties I was invited to over the last year. Maybe there was a reason I missed them. I actually like the whole concept but its definately a reminder of my poor hand/eye coordination skills. It was even a struggle for me on the easy setting. Maybe its just a matter of practice. The singer role might have been an option but most of the songs being selected were not very familiar to me. I know my friends want me to be more hip to the music scene but I am not sure Rock Band is the solution for me. After I few messages of "Failed" on the screen I decided to step back and watch some of the more skilled and practiced folks go to it. Rock Band apparently did inspire me to write to the blog again however so maybe something positive did come out of it. Could it have cured my writers block? Thanks to everyone who visited the stores over the holiday wee kend. I am headed to market again this week. Seems like a pretty regular thing these days. We still have lots of great winter items in all the stores but are starting to receive some vacation wear as well. Hopefully some of you will get a chance to escape the cold over the next few months. I am getting two days of it this week. May miss a bit of the am tomorrow due to a 3am central time arrival in LA. So much for sleep. Till Later, M
BLOGGING
MICHAEL
November 09, 2008
Could I have gotten the blogging blues? It is possible but the reality is that it has been a long few weeks. More than ever, we are striving to offer you the best, the freshest, and at the same time, sensible. We continue to get positive feedback about our selection and our service. Rest assured, we plan to make no cuts to the service and selection you are accustomed to. We are making way now for our best resort selection to date. By the end of the week you will see our new swim, beach, and r esortwear start to hit the floor at our Galleria store. The snow has started to fall and we know many of you are already planning your getaways. The guys swim and beach attire won't be far behind. We have a lot of exciting things coming this spring and look forward to sharing the news with you as we get into 2009. As always, there are a few special items for the guys at the Gaviidae store. Right now we have just received our new shipment of Tsovet timepieces. We are the first in the area to carry thi s exciting new brand. Stop by and check them out. New arrivals continue to hit our Len Druskin Outlet every week. Watch for an expanded accessories section in the next two weeks. As always, thanks for your support. I am enroute to Los Angeles and NY this week. A bit of sun and a bit of rain will be in my immediate future it seems. As for today, on the heels of a tough Gopher loss, we say Go Vikings! Till Later, M.
A TRIBUTE TO CONNIE SINGER
MICHAEL
October 22, 2008
As some of you might know, Len Druskin lost one of it's most devoted and long time employees this month, Connie Singer. That is one of the reasons I am a bit behind on my blog. It has been a very difficult time for many of us to cope with this great loss. Many of you will remember her as the lady with the glasses who always counted the tills, helped with the registers, and replenished the counter supplies. That may be all that the shopper could identify with Connie. The reality was, however, t hat she was an instrumental part of our company for almost 20 years. Connie was recruited by friend Bonnie Hayden when the store was still at 50th and France in the late 80's. The business was growing and then Backroom Manager Bonnie Hayden needed additional help. It was not long before Connie was working full time. After her family, her job became the other important part of her life. Connie cared about the company, its employees, and the Druskin family itself. She served as advisor to so many staff members on a day to day basis. She was not only very bright, but also very witty. Not a day went by without Connie being able to evoke a smile on our faces. From her trademark Cinnamon balls to her York Peppermint Patties to her signature Leather jacket collection. Connie was one of the people that helped to make Len Druskin such an institution over the last 32 years. After sitting next to Connie for the better part of the last 16 years, I can say I am honored to have worked with her and been her col league for so long. I have learned much from her and maybe I will finally start to listen to some of her advice. According to her, if I would have listened to her advice, I might already be retired. Either I don't listen well or maybe I just like to work. Connie gave sound and prudent advice and truly cared about her family and my store. Although Len Druskin will be slightly different without Connie Singer, it will still be the same wonderful place to shop, work, or just hangout. The cast of characte rs may change but the show goes on. That's the way Connie would want it. Thanks Connie for so many wonderful years of devoted service to Len Druskin, it's employees, and its customers. We'll miss you. Special thanks to her whole family for sharing her with us for all these years. A chapter in our history ends, a new one begins. Thanks Connie, we'll miss you. (And your cinnamon balls). Michael
CANADA
MICHAEL
September 09, 2008
As usual I am on the go. I am not sure I have ever hit so many cities in 24 hours time and actually left the airport. I started last night in Minneapolis/St. Paul, headed to Toronto where I spent the morning looking at some new lines, then off to Montreal where I spent the afternoon doing the same, and now off to NYC to continue. Many of you have been commenting about all the new products your finding at Len Druskin this season. As I have been telling you for a while, we are committed to movin g away from the sameness that has made shopping a bit dull for many of you in our own city and throughout the country. We are bound to make a few missteps in our quest to bring you new. When we are among the first stores to try a product we can never be sure about fit fabric etc.. We can do our best to research and size accordingly. Unfortunately, we don't always know exactly how it will fit or who it will fit best. Thus, during the first season or two, as part of our learning curve, we might run out of a size earlier in the season than we might hope. In other cases, some products just won't translate to our market and at some point you might catch them hitting our Outlet after we have given it a fair chance. Ultimately you decide every day when you make purchases with us which sizes products colors and vendors will be carried in the store. In some respects, every purchase is a vote. We also listen to feedback. I hope you all are enjoying all the new products in our stores this season. Expect ev en more new products in the next few seasons. The only downside is that many are a bit more expensive as most are imports and the recent weakness of the Dollar vs. the Euro has pushed many prices in an upward direction. I really feel like a great piece is worth it if you can invest and it has some staying power in the wardrobe. We keep this in mind as part of what we refer to as the price/value equation. A little economics, a bit of statistical analysis, and well, ok, a bit of fashion sense, and we bui ld our inventory. We do things very differently than most other stores you might shop in. Most of you know this I believe and appreciate our commitment to bringing you the newest, the best, and a great shopping experience to go with it. As always, thanks for your continued support. Fall is coming fast and furious in all stores so come check it out if you haven't already. Once you have explored, as always, we welcome your thoughts and feedback. Till Later, M
LINKED IN
MICHAEL
August 26, 2008
Ok, so how many of you are part of Linked In? I joined a few months ago after being invited to Join by a network member. Guess it's a close as I am getting to Facebook at the moment. For the first few months I received requests from friends and business associated to link with them. Now I am beginning to get requests from people I think I probably know but I can't really remember who they are. Who would think something so simple could be so complicated. Turn down the request and the person might be insulted, accept it unknowingly and suddenly everyone linked to me is now also linked to this mystery individual. It's just such a challenge to remember everyone I meet. Try as hard as I might, I guess my mind is limited to some extent. Maybe that is what the pictures are for, right? In Vegas the the moment for Spring 09 trade show circuit. Till Later, M
BACK IN THE CITIES
MICHAEL
August 13, 2008
I have landed back in the Cities after a long NY/LA market trip. The Olympic opening ceremony was not the same on the Bar television from which I viewed it Friday night. It was quite spectacular even from a distant view from my seat. I had a low key trip. No hot new restaurants, no star sightings, so major diversions this time. Sort of tried to live as close to my regular routine as possible this trip. Even took one afternoon off. (That is not easy for workaholics like me). Took a nap, sat at the pool a bit, just unwound. The W Hotel opens tonight so many are there checking it out. I meandered over to 112 to continue on my low key vibe. Will be back in the store for the first time in a few weeks. It's always sort of overwhelming the first day back as there is so much to absorb. We are receiving fall daily but still have a lot of things around for the remainder of summer. It's hard to believe I am now working on next summer. Think it looks great. Fall is looking great as well. Anyw ay, hope to see some of you the next few days as I am home till Sunday. Till Later, M
REUNION
MICHAEL
August 03, 2008
Last night was my 20 year high school reunion. I managed to arrange my travels so I was in the Cities last night and able to attend. I must say the experience, to quote on of my friends, was a bit surreal. For those who have attended such a gathering after say 20 years or more, I am sure you agree with the description and the emotions invoked by the whole experience. I have to admit I was a bit nervous about the whole experience beforehand, but ended up enjoying myself and reconnecting with ma ny friends I had not seen in a long time. I really thought everyone looked great and felt although 20 years had passed, the foundation of the group was much as it had been 20 years ago. I was suprised how many times I was asked if I was on Facebook. Guess maybe it's time to catch up with the times. I thought I had made leaps and bounds joining Linked In a few months ago. (Lol). For any of you who have a reunion coming up soon, I say take the time and go. It was really a great experience. Rumor has it there is an elementary school reunion being planned for next summer. Guess after more than 30 years, that could really be a trip. Anyway, I am off to NY for two days and then going directly to LA. New merchandise is arriving in all stores almost daily so stop in when you get a chance. Thanks to those of my fellow reunionites who came dressed in apparel from our stores. Go Armstrong Falcons! Till Later, M
SOUTH BEACH
MICHAEL
July 21, 2008
After spending a few days in South Beach for Women's Swim Market for Resort/Spring 2008-2009, I am off to NY to preview Men's Spring 2009. I survived the heat and humidity of South Beach over the last few days. It's quite the party town on weekends I must say. Being that I had to rise at 7am each morning for work, I think I picked the wrong hotel. Next year something more off the beaten path I think. It's no fun being at the party and not being able to participate. Oh well, on to NY today. We had to take the slow road via Memphis so its been a long day and an aircraft maintenance issue did not help. (Got to love connections- lol!). It's really hard to get in next year's mindset I must admit. Some days I just wish I could live in the present. The next few weeks are pretty hectic with markets. I want to try and get to the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight," but will have to see how the week goes. I rarely go to a movie while in NY unless there is a rainstorm or something prohibiting a g ood walk. From the reports of record sales, I am guessing a lot of you got to see the final performance from Heath Ledger over the weekend. On a fashion note, I am excited to report that this resort for swim looks amazing. I think you will be excited as we took the feedback from our first pass last Spring and have learned so much already. We think you will agree that the changes and additions we are making are really exciting. Only a few months and it will be in. I know, its hard to think about a wint er vacation when it's still summer. Anyway, will write more this week from the Big Apple. Till Later, M.
CALIFORNIA BOUND
MICHAEL
July 14, 2008
Once again, I am en route to Los Angeles today. Although I would like to say it's for a bit of R & R or just leisure time, it's for work. I will be returning tomorrow afternoon as such. In all three of our stores we are receiving great transitional merchandise every day. Although admittedly there are pieces that are a bit too wintry for the mood of the moment, most of it is stuff you can wear right away. We keep telling our manufacturers to ship winter weight clothing and coats later in the season when you are thinking about fall. This year being no exception, some of it is showing up already. Guess they don't listen or we are not important enough for them to listen to maybe. Either way, we are commited to new arrivals that you can wear when you purchase them. We will do our best to live up to this statement. Sometimes it's a bit out of our control. Let's face it, with the string of beautiful days we have been having it's hard to think about cold, snow, and ice. More tomorrow. Till L ater, M
JULY 4TH!
MICHAEL
July 03, 2008
Wishing each and every one of you a great Holiday weekend. In order to serve you better, all of our stores will be open Fri, July 4th from 11am to 5pm. We got a lot of great summer stuff from tees to shorts to flip flops and sunglasses that have just arrived. Stop in and get what you need for the weekend or for that trip you have planned. As we approach the summer Olympics in Beijing, our main stores have received a larger selection of the vintage Olympics tees we have been stocking for men an d women. Also just arrived in our Men's areas, vintage Star Trek tees. Watch for a lot new tee shirt lines for men and women in all of our stores over the next few weeks. Perfect hot weather wear now that Summer is in full swing. Many of you may see me in one of the stores over the next few weeks. I will be home for two whole weeks. I know, it's a record. After that Spring 09 markets begin so my travel schedule gets pretty crazy. I just spent the last few days in NY. Yesterday the weather was spec tacular and I took the opportunity to walk from Midtown to the Lower East Side to eat at one of my favorite spots, Frank. There is really no other city like NY. I am looking forward to spending time again there later in the month. Enjoy your weekend. Till Later, M
HOW WE DIFFER
MICHAEL
June 25, 2008
With the opening of so many stores in the last few years many people in the industry ask what makes Len Druskin different from all the others. At first, you think of all the standard answers: great selection, service, convenience, realiability, etc. What really makes us different from all the others is you. After more than 32 years in business we are proud to call our store your sort of personal shop. I take great pride in knowing that everything we do is driven by our customers. It's all ab out what you want from us every day as it's "your store.". Just today I found myself telling a manufacturer that their line seemed impractical for my customers. It's more about what you want from us then what someone wants to sell us or what labels all the "me too" stores have. I want you to know that we have worked harder than ever (ok, maybe a bit smarter than in the past as well), to bring you fresh and new products as we move ahead. Of course you will find the best of the tried and true lines and it ems, but you will find other fun pieces that are something new, fresh, or different. We respect your sophistication know that as smart shoppers we need to offer the very best and only that. As you come in over the next few months, wander, touch, try. In a world of daily bad news, it's nice to be able to not only have fun while shopping, but to be excited and engaged in what you see in the store. I hope to hear from some of you the next few months and am curious to hear your thoughts and feedback. Ok, as long as its good news otherwise someone else picked it out - LOL. Till Later, M
HAVE YOU MISSED ME?
MICHAEL
June 23, 2008
After a few days of Blackberry trouble, I decided my old model was shot. I made an excursion to the AT&T store in Southdale to deal with my loss. My phone seemed to be going as well due to so much wear and tear so I decided it was time for new. I set them both up but was under the impression I could not write from my regular email and needed to reset my blackberry address. I found out yesterday this is not the case so here I am. Everyone is entitled to a few weeks off, right? It did take me a few days on the Blackberry to get used to the center trackwheel vs. the side clickbar but now I am moving, or typing, as it be, in usual form. Maybe not as fast as a twitterer, but at a respectable clip. I am still having issues with my conversion from the razor phone to the LG. I may switch back before the end of the week. I find it hard to hear when it rings. Maybe it's just growing old. Nonetheless, here I am sitting where else but in flight. I watched the Dr. Suess movie for a bit but my mi nd wandered. Who picks the inflight movies anyway. Maybe because it's summer they are geared toward families and young kids. Don't get me wrong, I love Dr. Suess. After all whose childhood wasn't adorned with plenty of Grinch or Cat in the Hat. Somewhere I must have the books in storage or my sister does. I am on my way to LA and Chicago tonight. (I know, this entry sounds like it could be made any week of the year.). Due to escalating airfares however I have been trying Hotwire for my hotel rooms. This time it's they Kyoto Gardens hotel in Downtown LA. I do know its close to two of my favorite Downtown LA restaurants, Pete's and Sushi Gen, so how bad can it be. On these short trips a clean room and convenience is really all I need. Thursday it's off to Chicago to finish the Women's shoe orders for the season. They are looking good so think you will all be impressed with what is coming. Summer is finally upon us as of today (as far as the calendar goes at least), so come in and check out al l the great new summer arrivals for hot weather. We still have summer coming every day so don't worry, we are not picked over like everyone else waiting for Fall. We want to enjoy the season so stop in any of our three stores and grab something for summer. Till Later, M
LA MADNESS
MICHAEL
May 19, 2008
I was so puzzled today when I tried to book my rental car on line for arrival in LA tonight. The message on the screen read "No cars available for selected dates." I thought there must be an issue with the site or my typing and being short on time, picked up the phone and decided to book it the old fashioned way. Unfortunatley, I was given the same response on the phone, no cars. I thought to myself, what on earth is going on in Los Angeles this week? Then I remembered the Lakers game that will take place Wed night against the opponent to emerge after tonight's game. My friend pointed out that the American Idol finals are taking place this week as well at the Nokia theater in Downtown LA. That, on top of a convention or two and some hot weather, must have been enough to put the planes, cars, and hotels on overload. Should be an interesting week. If I did not have such a bad cold I could probably engage a bit more in the fanfare this week. Maybe a shot of Nyquil again tonight will help matters. I thought it was late in the season for a cold. So much for that idea. At least it will be a decent TV week with Season Finales coupled with Hockey and Basketball finals and of course, American Idol. Guess there will be something for everyone. You probably all think we are crazy with the amount of travel that I have been doing. It's really about our commitment to giving you the best of the best. (Maybe I really just like flying - lol). We are really excited about what we are working on a nd know you will be as well. I still can't say too much as we all know how many other stores like to follow the leader, so to speak, but can give you more details soon. We have new Summer merchandise arriving daily in all of our stores so we still have a long way to go before Fall. Thanks for the continued support. More this week from LA. Till Later, M
TOO MUCH BAD NEWS
MICHAEL
May 12, 2008
You guessed it, I am again on an airplane, which affords me some time to write in. It also gave me a chance to read both "The Wall Street Journal" and "USA Today" cover to cover. Maybe today's news is worse than usual due to the cyclone and the tornadoes, but it just was so gloomy. Tomorrow we will be hit with news of the Earthquake in China as well. All this on top of bad economic news and its too much to absorb some days. It does make me thankful each and every day for how simple and easy my life really is. Sure I work hard, but it is hard to imagine the toll some of these disasters take on the people affected by them. I have regretfully experienced an earthquake and a tornado first hand. Both are frightening in their own way. My thoughts go out to the victims or those affected by all these natural disasters in the last few days. Let's hope the forecasters are not correct in their predictions for more natural disasters this summer. It all makes the high price of gas seem like a minor issue. I am off to NY, by the way, to begin our Holiday 08 buy. It's hard to think about gift giving for the holidays but that is where my head will be this week and next when I am in LA. A full week at home will follow. As we head into the summer months, we will keep you posted on new developments coming to all our stores this fall season. Till Later, M
YOU GUESSED IT
MICHAEL
May 03, 2008
Yes, I am onboard another flight. This time I am on my way to NY. I will spending the greater part of the next few days looking at final items for late fall and accessories. No time for r and r but will sneak in some good dinners I hope. Nothing too serious, just good food. I am sure Tuesday will be a day of political talk on the airwaves throughout the country. What a busy week. We are working on lots of exciting things for Fall that we hope you will really embrace. A few years behind (we can't be first at everything, it simply wouldn't be fair the the competiton), but not last, we will be introducing more frequent email communication with those of you who supply us with your email addresses. Don't expect floods of boring emails telling you things like "Our Spring merchandise has arrived.". That's because, you, like I, would say "So What" and consequently hit the delete icon. We will tell you about things that we hope will interest you. From a great new item, to a local happening, to eve nt information, we will be in touch. I don't like junk email and we know you don't need more stores emailing you about nothing. As such, its my commitment to you that our emails will be relevant and timely. (Is that sort of like cautiously optomistic?). I will have to shut down soon for landing but will try and email (is that all I do anymore?) from NY. The pilot is telling us its cold and rainy. At least by now I know what that is like. Get the umbrellas out. Till Later, M
JET STREAM
MICHAEL
April 28, 2008
So it seems the jet stream is too far South for this time of year. That news, according to the am news report I watched this morning, should not come as a suprise. The big question is, how long will it last? Summer will come eventually so we are not giving up. We will have fresh, new Spring and Summer clothes arriving daily through July. Even with the chilly weather, we have great stuff for the transition weather period. More of you have been asking for lightweight jackets so we have been send ing more to all the stores. It's really hard for us to predict as a few years ago it was in the 90's already. We do our best to react each week to what you are telling us and try and meet your needs and expectations. Who ever said retail and shopping were an exact science. New this week are our recycled shopping bags at our main stores. We will be phasing out of our previous bags over the coming weeks as we move to recycled paper bags in all stores. Watch for other "go green" news from us soon. By t he way, if you guessed I was writing from in flight again, you are right. Scared away by the snow on Saturday, I am headed back to LA for today and tomorrow. I will be at the main stores Wednesday thru Saturday this week then off to NY to look at Accessories. Many of you have commented on our increased selection of accessories this Spring. Watch for new items to arrive in the coming months. Don't forget out Thursday night "Unwind" in our Gaviidae Len Druskin Man location. Cocktails, Beer, Wine, and A ppetizers all on Thursdays from 4-8 only at Gaviidae. Till Later, M
A NEW SEASON
MICHAEL
April 21, 2008
Spring may finally have arrived. I am sorry to say our Hockey season recently came to an end but congratulations to the whole Wild team for a great season. Now its Twins time! With the warmer weather, a few additonal smiles on our faces (lol), and time outdoors, comes the need for a few new Spring clothes. We will be receiving more men's jackets this week for the Spring weather. We have some great lightweight jackets for women as well. Expect more men's jackets by weeks end. Also, new denim has arrived recently. Both new styles and brands at all stores. You are asking for new, we are listening. (At least we think we are). We are working on plans to better communicate with you, our customers, beginning Fall 08. You have told us you don't want endless streams of meaningless emails. We will be keeping focused, relevant, and limited in our email contacts. We want to let you know on a more frequent basis (up from currently which is not at all) what is going on in our stores and what has new ly arrived. If you have input or feedback into what you want to hear, let us know. We will keep you in the loop as we outline what will be happening in our stores this Fall. For now, I am headed to LA for a change. A bit of sunshine and my $15 Rudy's haircut can do anyone some good. I will be in the stores Fri-Sun and hope to see some of you then. Till Later. M
SPRING FEVER
MICHAEL
April 14, 2008
Could Spring really be in the air? Today was spectacular (Although I spent the greater part of it hooked up to my headset in my windowless office). I did catch a bit of it on my way to, where else, the airport. I am on my way to NY for a few days. Trying to finish Fall. Next week off to LA to do the same. Have to be pretty much wrapped up by the end of the month other than Women's accessories which comes in early May back in NY. It is supposed to be beautiful in NY as well so I am hoping t o walk a lot and soak in the city, so to speak. The subway stairs will be a bit more challenging with my new rolling briefcase (or desk), but once and a while I have to give my arms some work I guess. Good luck to the Wild tonight. Hopefully Game 3 will go the Minnesota way. I am in flight so the game will be underway by the time this posts. I have little to say today about clothes. The one thing I must say is that after thumbing through all the usual weekly magazines on the plane, there is little to report. Till Later, M
TENNIS ELBOW
MICHAEL
April 09, 2008
When I signed up for this job I thought I would be spared from irritating conditions like Tennis Elbow. After all, my job is supposed to be pretty low key and glamourous right? Well, after years of lifting clothes and hangars and dragging multiple suitcases coast to coast I can now report my first work related condition. I now have the brace and all. Apparently 38 is older than I think. Youth is all in the mind right? I just changed to a rolling briefcase as well. I guess the Buick is next (lol). I spent some of the day looking into new items. Expect to see some new items soon in our stores. Recycled shopping bags, headphones, and more to come soon. Even in denim we are striving to offer you fresh and new. Soon to arrive at Galleria- People's Liberation Womens', William Rast Men's (we have women's already), and Taverniti Men's and Women's. Gaviidae will have Taverniti and some William Rast soon as well. Expect to see Simon Miller in both our men's areas by months end. It's just a bit of all the new ideas, concepts, and vendors coming soon to the Len Druskin stores. Also coming this summer, expect more information from us by email. If you have not already signed on to our email list, visit either lendruskin.com, lendruskinman.com, or lendruskinoutlet.com and sign up to the store you are most interested in. (Or all if you feel so inclined). Good things to come. (Except for Friday's snowstorm - ugg!) Till Later, M
SNOW
MICHAEL
April 01, 2008
Seems March wanted to go out like a lion. It was really a dreary wet day around here. Amazing that I thought my flight to Los Angeles might actually leave at a reasonable hour. It's now 1:00 am and we just got in the air. So much for a good nights rest. I was just starting to feel normal (whatever that is) after being home for a week and then this ordeal. It did afford me some time to write into the blog which I have so obviously neglected. I have just been so consumed in work that I have not had time to partake in the world around me. The problem with this is not only do I lack knowlege of what is happening in some of the news and for the most part what transpired in pop culture, but I lack fresh, exciting topics to comment on. I know, the blog is supossed to be about fashion. Some days I have had enough fashion at work so the last thing I want to talk about here is clothes. Baseball opener anyone? Our Twins tees for the guys are running a bit late (not due to the manufacturer this ti me but due to me forgetting to place the order on time). Thus, we'll be about a week behind the opener on our Twins debut. We do have Wild tees in stock though so I can't be totally criticized. Due to the fact that I don't sleep well on planes (I guess I picked the wrong career), I will have plenty of time to catch up on current events over the next 3 hours and 19 minutes according to pilot who just finished his announcements. Hopefully a few newspapers and magazines will inspire me to write in agai n tomorrow. Till Later, M
INSPIRATION
MICHAEL
March 12, 2008
One of the more interesting parts of travel is sometimes the time spent on the plane sans contact from the outside world. I really forget it what is was like in a world before Blackberries, I Phones, Cellphones, and the like. Sometimes (ok, maybe most of the time) it seems that these devices grab most of my attention and a lot of my thought is put into responding to emails, calls. texts, or just absorbing more information. Seems a bit ironic then that I am writing on one of these very devices d uring my few cherished hours of down time. I guess the blog is really not work, its an expression. The other day I spent the better part of my flight seated next to a fairly renowned designer of space and interiors. She reminded me of all the great exhibits on display that I had been missing. Two great exhibits in NY that I had not gotten the opportunity to see last week. Seems I am always working. (This you know is the truth). I, like many others, forget to take the time to take advantage of what is happening in the communities around us. Tonight, while watching "*August Rush" in flight, I was reminded of how important music is in our world and to each of us, individually and as a community. For those of you who fly NWA all the time, I get a free flick quite often as I fly United quite a bit. Scary to think in the last few weeks United has been my main link to the world of Arts and Entertainment. The lady who sat next to me last week send her grandchildren, all seven of them, a postcard from a dif ferent artist each week. She had accidentally purchased an extra and realized during flight and so it was offered to me. It was a bit quirky and brought a smile to my face. Isn't that what its all about. I'm committed to making an effort to engage more in the world around me (the world outside of Len Druskin that is). It's not going to be easy but you may see me a bit more at a concert, a sporting event, an art exhibit, movie, play, or just taking a run on a nice day. I'm as dedicated as always to bri nging you the best of the best and making all our stores a great shopping experience. I guess even I am entitled to a minute here and there (ok, maybe a few hours) to soak it all in. The store will still be there tomorrow. In the meantime, landing soon in LA and then off to the hotel for a night of printing reports for the day tomorrow. It all sure sounded good though. I'll let you know how I'm doing in a few days. Does going to a great Pizzeria and people watching count?? I guess it all does in som e way, shape, or form. Till Later, M
ROCKET MAN
MICHAEL
March 05, 2008
I am flight and listening to Rocket Man from Elton John, one of my favorite collections of his songs. I have just watched an episode of Without a Trace and an episode of Monk. So many options and so much time. I am pondering a movie but nothing jumped out at me that I have not seen so doing the ADD option tonight, a bit of this and a bit of that. By the way, I guess for those of you who don't know me well, you now know that my music taste tends toward the more classic side. For those who do kn ow me I know you are chuckling. I try to be on the forefront of what is happening in pop culture but must admit I fall short in the music section. I have always wondered if its that I have a visual memory instead of a good memory for what I hear. Sometimes the brain is a puzzling thing. I have not been great about writing in and am sorry. It has been a bit hectic. I just attended a new trade show in Santa Monica and you will start to see a few of my finds this month. We are continuing our search for new, innovative, inspirational, fresh, and wearable. (Yes, if you are going to spend, we know you want to wear it). In addition to all the great new clothes, all stores will have more accessories than ever before. It's just one of the many changes you will see in the coming months at all our stores. I am on my way to NY where we will delve into Women's Fall 08. Men's is pretty much put to bed. We have definately renewed our commitment to offering you one of the nation's best selections of specialty b rands. We can't wait to see what you think. The changes are already underway so stop in, indulge, embrace. All three of our stores and concepts are part of this evolution. Your premium experience is being taken to a whole new level. (Maybe I have been listening to too many airline ads onboard-lol). I will say I am enjoying whatever this gadget is they gave me for the flight. Even I deserve a few hours of sanity break. Till Later, M
VEGAS
MICHAEL
February 17, 2008
Landed from Vegas last night and still reeling it seems. I should be reeling from partying and playing I suppose since its Vegas we're talking about. Did have a bit of fun (and a few too many Margaritas one night) but really worked hard. I know, that's my job so not asking you to play your little violins for me but really I did crank there. Still mostly working on Men's Fall 08 but have to say that I think I have put together our best assortment yet for the 10th anniversary of our men's busine ss this fall. Not to downplay the great spring and summer coming in as its got a great vibe as well, but there is more to fall. We start women's in two weeks and will dig into that with the same fervor. I may collapse with fatigue by the time markets end in late March but know it's going to be worth it. I haven't had as many topical emails as I am a bit out of the loop of the moment. I am off again Tuesday for the outlet and will keep you all posted on my travels. Also off to Toronto next week to lo ok at a new line. Seems like it never ends some days. This day is coming to an end though. Till Later, M
NY
MICHAEL
February 11, 2008
Ok, I've been delinquint again writing in. I have been in market nonstop the last few weeks. Trying to wrap up Men's Fall 08 and begin the journey into Women's Fall 08. There is so much to look at. We are focusing on the heritage of Len Druskin this fall. In this era of overstimulation and a plethora of options, we have decided to concentrate on what we think is most important to you. We are listening to you through our ears but also through your purchases. I think you will be excited with w hat we are doing. You have always counted on us to be a leader and an experience. We promise to do our best to be both. I may sound a bit like a politician I guess but seems to be the year for speeches. I do need to get on my soapbox once and a while. I am in flight to Las Vegas this evening for the big yearly trade show. (And maybe a bit of nightlife if I can stay up that late). I am going to check out the new Palazzo hotel and shops where the new Barney's is located. Stay warm this week and think vacation. We have so many amazing spring clothes in all three stores. I will actually be in the stores next week for the first time since December. Looking forward to seeing many of you soon. Till Later, M
EMPTY?
MICHAEL
January 26, 2008
Ok, some of you are wondering why our Downtown store is starting to look a bit leaner than it had the first few months. We are going to answer that question tonight. For starters, it's clearance time in Men's and all our markdowns go to our Southdale outlet. The other factor is that we are in the process of a transformation that you will slowly take shape between now and September. We have spent our first six months in the city listening to your feedback and are responding. Little by little y ou will see these changes occur. In the meantime, keep shopping as we have great things coming in there for spring. Just yesterday we received some amazing new arrivals from Vince. What you might ask is this transformation? Really, you have been asking for our Downtown store to be cool, smart, sophisticated, and unique. We are going to give that to you 100 percent and more. Wait till you see what we have in store. The journey is just beginning. We haven't ignored our Galleria or Outlet stores eithe r. Change is taking place weekly in both those stores as well. In the coming weeks I will fill you in on exactly what is taking shape at Len Druskin Man in Gaviidae. We have secured a lot of exclusives for our region and state on a lot of amazing products. We just can't let the cat out of the bag quite yet. Keep checking back. Till later, M
COLD!
MICHAEL
January 19, 2008
It seems even I caught a bit of the bitter cold in between my trips this week. I arrived home Thursday afternoon and am enroute now to New York, just enough time to catch a bit of our sub zero Minnesota winter. People elsewhere always seem shocked that we can endure such temperatures. We dress appropriately and limit our time of exposure during such extreme cold. Is it really so hard to understand? It' just part of what we endure to take advantage of all the great things our city has to offer . The Len Druskin stores, I know, are certainly at the top of everyone's list (lol). In the meantime Spring merchandise is coming into all three of our stores. I think the best way to describe our direction this spring is to think 60's. Over the next few months you will see what I mean when you stop by any of our stores. I will miss the rest of the cold snap it seems as I will be in NY and Los Angeles this week. Two restaurant tips for those headed to LA soon. Check out Pizzeria Mozza (not to be conf used with Osteria Mozza next door) and Comme Ca. I highly recommend both spots if they are your thing. I believe you can check out menu's on both restaurant's websites. We will keep you posted as our new things hit our stores. A new accessories area for women is taking shape at our Galleria store. It's going to be a great addition. We hope you all feel the same. Will write more from NY. Till Later, M
NEW YORK
MICHAEL
January 10, 2008
I have been in NY since Saturday evening and it was unseasonably warm. It was just about 70 degrees, in fact, on Tuesday. It definately had me inspired for Spring and Summer. I am off to Los Angeles tonight to continue the Summer shopping. You are going to see more new products and categories than you have seen from us in over a decade. Fasten you seat belts, were going full speed ahead. I honestly can't wait to see what you think of the transformation thats taking place over the coming mon ths at both our Galleria and Gaviidae common stores. We know you love Len Druskin Beach so wait till you see what's next. I am sorry I have not written in over the last few days but have been working hard on all the newness coming soon. Len is joining me on the LA leg of this Jan market. He usually makes the Jan trip to LA each year. We will report on what's happening there soon. With the cancelation of the Golden Globes I think this trip the city wont be in its usually January bustle. I am sure the re will be enough going on in its absence to keep us busy. Till Later, M
WINTER'S ILLNESSES
MICHAEL
December 29, 2007
If you are wondering what happened to me, this time I have a good excuse for not writing in. I got sucked in by one of this winter's viruses late last week and it really took me down hard. I have not been as sick in as long as I can remember. Hopefully, most of you will be spared from this one. I have been back to work about 2 days but still not moving my usual speed. I have about a week to get my act together before my next "dog and pony show" starts. I will be off to NY and LA late next wee k to finish buying Summer 08. Shortly after I begin Men's Fall 08. We are continuing to research new and fresh for 08. Many of you may have noticed some changes in our stores over the last few weeks and hopefully you like them. Expect to see many more over the next few months. Len Druskin Beach is up and running and getting a great response from so many of you. For those who have not been in lately, our Galleria store now has an extensive selection of swim and beach apparel unrivaled in the Metro are a, another Len Druskin first. If a hot weather trip is in your plans, stop by and check our new Len Druskin Beach out. For Men, both our Galleria and Gaviidae Common stores have an extensive selection of boardshorts and walkshorts already in stock. Resortwear is also starting to arrive at Len Druskin Outlet in Southdale. Hopefully you all missed my absence. I am back and will write in before the New Year. (Yes, I know it's only 2 days away) Till Later, M
HOLIDAY SHOPPING
MICHAEL
December 21, 2007
The holiday shopping season means I am out and about less. Longer hours and a bit faster pace. (Not that we ever move slowly) We have to try and keep up with many of you who are finishing your holiday shopping, looking for that perfect piece to wear to events over the next few weeks, getting ready for a vacation, or just need a pick me up. You guys seem to like what's come in over the last few weeks so I guess they'll keep me one more season. (Lol) The outlet has lots of amazing new stuff as well. I am not as topical this evening as I have not been out and about the last few days. Monday night I get to go to the movies. Somet hing I have not done for a while. I have a few days to figure out what to see. It should be my biggest problem, right? Anyway, we are fully stocked and staffed at all three stores so if you still have shopping to do, we're ready. Don't forget our famous free complimentary gift wrap. Many of your packages were or will be wrapped by Len himself. Hope to see you in the next few days. I will be at Galleria this weekend for those who haven't seen me for a while. Happy Shopping. Till Later, M
SATELLITE RADIO
MICHAEL
December 14, 2007
My lease was up so I got a new car today. Same thing with a few new features. I guess you can say technoligical progress mixed with a few extra amenities. This one has Sirius satellite radio. Until now, this had been only something I indulged in now and then in my Hertz rentals in Los Angeles. Like Direct TV, I know have many more options than I can even fathom sampling. The question is, will I explore music, talk, or topics I know little about, or stick with the comfortable and familiar. S eems like a question many of us face in life everyday. I guess I should at least try and expand my horizons as I am being given the opportunity. Just seems easier sometimes to stick with the familiar. My job is to seek out the new and the exciting, however, while selecting the best of the familiar and established. I guess I should practice what I preach. Only time will tell if I veer from the preset stations. I will keep you posted. In the meatime, stay warm. Till Later, M
NEW YORK
MICHAEL
December 06, 2007
I have been in NY for the last few days. It's the holiday season so it was a treat to spend a few days in the city. At the moment I am on my way to Los Angeles for a day. I know, it all sounds so amazing. Actually, I did enjoy NY as I have not spent much time there lately. Was lucky enough to take a few hours and walk 5th Avenue to take in the sights, sounds, and smells of the city. I also got to visit a few of my favorite NY restaurants. It was a bit windy and cold but the holiday season was in full swing. Then reality hit, an almost 2 hour taxi ride to JFK, a delayed flight, and thus a very late arrival in Los Angeles. Who needs sleep anyway? I am excited to tell you that I was in NY working on some exciting new lines coming in 2008. As usual, some are new to the cities, so I can't say too much yet. We have so much happening going into 2008 that I can't wait to share all the news. New products will abound in all three of our stores. More in the coming weeks. For now, they are showing another flick. Till Later, M
THANKSGIVING
MICHAEL
November 25, 2007
It's a bit late but I hope you all enjoyed your holiday weekend. It is winding down with many of us watching the New England/Philadelphia game to close out the weekend. It was nice to see so many of you this weekend especially our out of town guests. The weather was great and it was hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner. We celebrated Turkey day, retailer style, by going out to dinner as we had to rise early friday to open the outlet at 6am. The other stores followed a bit la ter and the holiday shopping season officially kicked off. We have a lot of new things arriving weekly at our stores that will make great gifts or just something you might need for a late season fill in or an upcoming vacation. I will be filling you all in during the coming weeks on a lot of things we have in store for 2008. Stay tuned. Till Later, M
ROCK THE VOTE
MICHAEL
November 16, 2007
Walking down Robertson Blvd. in Los Angeles the other day I noticed the windows in one of LA's celebrity driven shops featuring the "Rock the Vote" line. I had the line presented to me a few weeks ago as well. I decided to pass. It's not that I don't think that it is very important for every eligable American citizen to express their right to vote. I think it is extremely important in my mind. I am just not sure its my place as a company to get involved in politics. Its kind of like the "chu rch and state" thing to me. I just don't think politics and retail are a match. If the "Obama is my Homeboy" tee (which is in silver foil on bright royal blue cotton just in case you wondered) is on display am I pushing the Democratic Platform over the Republican, Independant, or any other? What if I had the Republican tees in front of the others? I just don't think you come in my store for me to push any particular political idea or message. The media can give you enough of that. Its my place to off er really great clothes, accessories, footwear, and now beachwear and a really great shopping experience. I do hope you all vote next November for what you believe is right for America. I just don't think it's my place to use my store to influence anyone one way or another. Maybe I'm taking the whole thing too seriously but those are my thoughts on the topic. I know, it's just a tee shirt line, but I do put thought (somtimes good, sometimes bad) into everything I put in our store. This is probably the most serious entry into the blog to date. I just thought it was worth noting. Anyway, we hope to see you soon at one of our stores which, as always, are focused on nothing else but making all of you look and feel great. I know, sounds sappy, but is really the truth. (I know, I admit it, I have just exposed my flaw of overthinking-lol) Till Later, M

November 11, 2007
It seems I have fallen behind over the last few weeks, not just with the blog, but with everything. I think I may finally be "seeing the light", so to speak. I really cranked this week to get back on track and am now back en route to Los Angleles again. We have been really doing our homework for next season to do something different. I myself have gotten a bit bored over the last few seasons. I think you will all really be excited by the changes we are making over the coming months. You won't see the end result till March but each week unitl then the changes will take place little by little. I can't say too much yet but be ready to see a lot of "new" ideas from us. Conceptually, its time for us to evolve, and I think you will see that over the coming months. I just don't want to say too much as we don't want the "me too" stores getting too much info before we introduce all our new ideas. I will say the women's beachwear has started to hit the floor and looks amazing. You will find lines not found elsewhere in the 5 state area. The guy's beach stuff will start hitting before Thanksgiving. We will have some new lines there as well. I know Minnesota is not exactly the beach scene, now you have Len Druskin Beach. Just one of the many fresh concepts you will find at Len Druskin in the coming months. Len Druskin Man and Len Druskin Outlet won't be left out either. More info this week on what's happening in those spots. Till Later, M

THE WEDDING INVITATION
MICHAEL
November 04, 2007
Ok, I admit I am not the best at checking my mail. I maybe check the box once a week. I pay my bills on line so other than junk mail, offers for credit cards I don't need, and the occassional thank you note, there is usually no reason to check frequently. Gone are the days of thinking the Sweepstakes folks would show up at my door and in are the days of email and evites. This month I skipped checking for a week and then left town for two plus weeks. Problem was that a day or two after I check ed the mail for the last time earlier this month a wedding invitation appeared. The couple did not have my address when they first mailed so mine, I am guessing, came toward the tail end. I returned home from my trip last night to find this beautiful invitation, along with the rest of the mail, delivered by my building to my unit. I was so mortified. How could I have messed this up. I did not even get to send the reply card. The wedding was today. These are two amazing people and I messed up. Somet hing so simple as not checking my mail enough and I fail in the friendship column. I know that at least one member of the couple reads this from time to time so I will ask for their forgiveness. I wish them only the best and am sorry I was not able to share their joy in becoming man and wife today. Certainly I will send a gift but none of that is the same as sharing such a special moment in person. I know, I sound a bit like a Hallmark card at the moment, but a wedding is a big deal. Anyway, to Brad a nd Renee, congrats. I have learned another lesson in the last 24 hours, check thy maillbox daily. A day to be humble I guess. (Its good to be humble everyday to be honest). WHAT HAPPENED TO ME?
MICHAEL
November 02, 2007
Ok, I have fallen of the planet for two weeks. In actuality, I have been at market for two weeks. A record for me. I have lots to talk about but will write en route to Minneapolis on Saturday. Wow is all I have to say. Wait till you see what we have for you for 2008! Till Later, M
MY CITY WEEK
MICHAEL
October 12, 2007
I have spent the better part of this week Downtown. (Ok, the first two days in Los Angeles) I will also be there tomorrow and Saturday. I must admit I still haven't walked to work. I have had to run out to Galleria for customer needs almost every day though so I guess I felt I needed my car. I am happy to see the support many of you are giving our city store. Thanks to the ladies as well for the gift purchases or bringing the men in their life in the shop. We promise that over the coming mont hs and seasons each store will continue to develop slightly different personalities while staying true to the Len Druskin vibe. In about a week I will head to Los Angeles for the major Spring 08 Women' market. I have been laying the groundwork already for Spring. I think most of you will be very excited about some of the changes we are making. You will begin to see our extensive swim collection hit our floor by early November. We are very excited that we will be offering one of the city's most extensiv e beach collections. Another Len Druskin first. Stay tuned for more details. Plan those vacations now. We will have plenty of great stuff to wear poolside or out to dinner and into the late night. I know, we just started fall and I am talking winter vacation. I am a retailer, its my job. I will be in all three stores next week. Hopefully I will see some of you then. Till Later. M
A HOT QUIET SUNDAY
MICHAEL
October 08, 2007
With the Vikings off this week and such hot weather, it felt like a late Summer Sunday. It seems, however, that fall will be in the air by later this week. With the Vikings back in action, the Wild season underway, and the World Series slowly approaching, we know fall is coming soon. (Maybe as early as Tuesday) With fall we get falling leaves, chilly nights, the opportunity to wear our new clothes, and my Birthday. I celebrated a bit early with a group of friends Friday night at The King and I . I had not been there for a while and forgot just how much I like it there. I have two other friends with birthdays this month so we celebrated all three at once. I questioned why we chose The King and I when the more obvious choice would have been the new Dave and Buster's in Maple Grove. In all seriousness (is that a word), don't adults deserve a grown up version of Chuck E Cheese. Being too old to have grown up in the Chuck E Cheese craze, I am simply noting the most common comparison. I am from th e era of Cicero's, Farrell's, and Shakey's. Shakey's is still around in some areas. In Los Angeles, I drive past a Shakey's every day on my way downtown from the Beverly Hills/West Hollywood area. It is on Olympic near San Vicente for those who might be interested. I have wondered for years if I would enjoy a pizza at Shakey's maybe. Then again, do I really want to revisit pitchers of rootbeer and screaming kids eating pizza. As such, I have never gone in. I am continuing my search for fresh and new to morrow. What will I find. One of my friends suggested a few tee shirts to pay tribite to those who grew up fans of Dungeons and Dragons. If they can do Star Wars tees why not D and D? I will suggest it and see what happens. I myself was never grasped by this phenomenon. I am here to serve the public though and to be open to all ideas. I am a bit tired and thus the rambling tonight. We are late (what's new). There was an issue with the carpet on the plane they said. I am guessing someone from the previous flight was ill or they used this as an excuse as they knew they would get no resistance about delaying the flight to fix this problem. True or not we are on our way. This will transmit upon landing at LAX. I am going to rest my weary eyes for a bit before we land. I like Fall and hope upon my return Tuesday night it will have arrived. Till Later, M
A LATE DINNER
MICHAEL
October 02, 2007
I have not made it to the gym for a few days and suddenly I have less to say. Does exercise make me more vocal. Is it the CNN or Fox News in the background that keeps me more informed? I am not sure. I am having a late dinner tonight as I spent time both at Galleria and Downtown today. Kind of nice to feel a bit of fall in the air today. It was also Len's birthday today. Happy Birthday to our founder. October if full of birthdays it seems. I guess winter is a busy time. I am a Libra as well, although mine comes later in the month. I am almost 38. I begin to wonder, how will I keep up with the trends and needs of the new generations? Somehow, I guess I will figure it out. I don't feel old so I guess I'm not, right? In any case, its been a busy week as we get our cold weather merchandise in and prepare for the holiday season. We have a lot of new early fall markdowns at Len Druskin Outlet as well as a lot of new arrivals daily at Len Druskin at the Galleria and Len Druskin Man in Gaviidae d owntown. Don't forget to join us Thursday for our Happy Hour at Gaviidae from 4-8pm. Even I will be around this week for a change. Till Later, M
FATIGUE
MICHAEL
September 25, 2007
Is it possible to look at too many clothes? I think maybe so, although is the best way to start the season and see what is out there and get grounded in the coming direction. It is around this time that each buyer will form a path for their women's Spring 2008 buy. There is so much out there to pick from for Spring you will most likely see very different messages from each store. I have identified what I think we be the central themes to our Women's Spring 08 looks. I can't share too much but c an tell you it is quite different from last year in many ways. Isn't that what fashion is about, change. To some extent we as buyers must always be evolving and testing new ideas and looks. One thing we are adhering to, however, is staying rooted in the sensible, wearable, and functional. Too many times it is easy to get caught up in fads. Spring will be pretty, feminine, and sexy. All good things for a woman in my book. I guess I segwayed from my fatigue notion. Maybe the fact that I have been hom e only about 24 hours in the last two weeks is quelling my energy level a bit. Today's rain did not make air travel in and out of Minneapolis easy. My door to door trip from Chicago to Los Angeles will be pushing 12 plus hours. I write this during hour 10. I am doing my best to be a bit entertaining and yet insightful at the same time. Not sure if I have achieved that tonight. Have not given the guys much time in this evening's blog entry. Guys, don't forget about our Happy Hour at Len Druskin Man in Gaviidae Common Downtown Minneapolis on Thursday nights from 4-8. So far it has been a hit. I always thought Beer and Wine went well with shopping. To those that have checked out our Gaviidae store, thanks. Keep giving us feedback. Your input does matter. (At least when I agree with it - lol) Being that I can barely see straight (and no it wasn't due to Northwest Airlines wonderful Wine selection this evening), its time for me to sign off. Till Later, M
THE SHOWS
MICHAEL
September 18, 2007
Day 2 of the shows today. I feel like I had on rollerskates. I know I didn't though because I don't have a broken ankle. I buzzed through hundreds and hundreds of booths and have nothing of major interest to report. The shows, previewing women' spring, continue to show many of the concepts, trends, and ideas from last spring and summer. Lots of dresses, wide leg pants, and prints. I did see a bit of a new color direction today but not enough to say it was a trend. On a totally different note I am staying in Philadelphia again this week and commuting to NY. The Eagles were in Monday night football this week so it was a bit crazy around here. I am eating basque style tapas this evening. Interesting. Very good but not exactly light. Good thing I worked out for an hour beforehand if that gives you the idea. The cava is amazing though. Have not had a glass since I was in Barcelona over a year ago. Hope you all stayed dry today in the rain. Seems OJ has now replaced Paris Hilton as the temp orary media obsession. Who next? Till Later, M
THE ST. PAUL GRILL
MICHAEL
September 14, 2007
It has been a long time since I have been to the St. Paul Hotel and Restaurant/Bar. As beautiful as downtown St. Paul is, it is not someplace I venture frequently. I have reason to this evening, however, as I have friends from out of town here for a wedding and I am meeting them after their rehursal dinner. I have not written during the last week. It has been a very busy week. I am sitting at the bar with a beer and waiting for a burger thinking that I need to write in. I am leaving Saturday f or New York to walk the many trade shows next week. That's my job right? I am staying in Philadelphia again though due to last minute decision to go and exorbatent hotel rates. I just can't justify it and I had a good time in Philly a few months ago under the same circumstances. Not that I don't love New York, but sometimes it's a lot to handle. I also kind of relish the hour or so of downtime I get on the trainride back each evening. Being a car driven commute here in the cities, we miss that downtim e sometimes I think. Guess it depends on if you consider driving downtime. The hour of lost sleep is a bummer on the flip side. I guess you can't have it both ways as they say. It's chilly tonight I I myself need a few new things for fall. Number one, I am a bit thinner than last year and number two, I always like some new stuff. I know, you're thinking to youselves if he wants nothing new why is he in this business. Don't worry, yes I am getting a few new things. I have to admit I ordered a new jac ket for fall. We have not had ski jackets before and mine is ancient. I ordered an Arcteryx from the downtown store. We have some great jackets there. Galleria does not carry that brand but will be receiving its sport outerwear by the end of the month. I will put my rollerskates on for next week and do my best to keep things fun and interesting. We know you expect a lot from us so I have my work cut out for me. All the "me too" stores will be on my heels but I will have to work that much harder, or is it smarter. Keep expecting exciting things from us over the coming months. We will be making another big announcement mid October. No, not another store opening. I will keep you posted. In the meantime, if any of you are shopping this weekend we hope to see you at one of the stores. I will be at Galleria on Saturday and Gaviidae on Sunday. We think the stores downtown should be open Sunday. We are open and will see if others follow. Waiting for my burger. I use the "burn it I won't return it lin go when I order." Guess it might take a while. There's always the beer. Till Later, M
FRIDAY NIGHT IN THE CITY
MICHAEL
September 07, 2007
Ok, so I learned one thing about the city on Friday nights, people don't work out. I left the new store, gym bag in hand, a few minutes after 7:00pm and walked to the Arena Club a few blocks away. Only when I arrived did I realize that on Friday evenings they close at 8:00pm. I thought this was the era of 24 hour fitness! Not in downtown Minneapolis I take it. Drinks abound on Friday night so I guess I need to rethink my routine. Should my new Downtown life include "happy hour" on Fridays? I ended up driving to the burbs for my normal workout feeling to guilty. I will let you know which side of my brain wins next Friday. In the meantime Fall, my favorite season, is about to begin according to the forecasters. All three stores have great new merchandise for the cooler weather. I will be at Galleria and Southdale Saturday and Gaviidae on Sunday. Maybe I will see some of you. Till Later, M
THE ROUTINE BEGINS
MICHAEL
September 05, 2007
I know Fall is a few weeks off but being that we are now all getting into our routines for the season and that it will be 60 degrees by Monday, it feels like Summer is winding down. I personally missed a lot of summer this year dealing with the opening of the new Downtown store. I am not really sure what I missed other than some sun and a barbeque or two. I am wanting to hit the movies to see Superbad. I have know idea why but I hear its good. I guess that's all relative. Maybe this weekend. Then again, with my track record lately of getting to the movies, maybe not. I am off to Los Angeles again Sunday. I have been home a full week so it must be time to hop on the plane again. All stores have some great stuff and the outlet will have a lot of new arrivals tomorrow and Friday in time for the weekend. Thanks to those who have visited us in Gaviidae Common our first two weeks. Remember to unwind with us at Len Druskin Man in Gaviidae on Thursday nights from 4-8 with appetizers, beer, wine , and good people. (I will be there tomorrow as well so depending on your opinion of me that's either a plus or a minus). I will also be at the Galleria Saturday. Yes, I may need to polish my rollerskates soon. Till later, M
THE TRIP ENDS
MICHAEL
August 31, 2007
I am enroute to the Twin Cities after a long crazy week in Vegas and Los Angeles. I looked and looked in vegas as there were thousands of lines showing. Is it possible that, for the most part, I like what we have the best. There was no must have new line, but rather good pieces from some of our favorites. We will be adding and subtracting a few things downtown by Spring 08 and look forward to each store being "len druskin" in dna but at the same time, having its own look and feel. It will tak e a season or so to develop, but we are committed to making each store distinctive and somewhat unique. We think you will be excited by some of the products that will be added to the mix in each location including an expanded vintage sneaker section for spring 08. You will also see the launch of Len Druskin Beach for Resort 08. Lots of great swim and beach apparel and accessories for men and women. We have been the premier destination for denim for almost 8 years. Beginning this November, we hope to b e the first choice for swim and beach apparel in the Twin Cities. More news to come soon. We worked hard this week and kept chuckling that people think our job is glamourous as we crawled (literally) into bed each night after looking at hundreds of lines each day. We did have some great dinners. When in vegas I highly recommend Social House for Sushi and Japanese in TI. Also, 9 in the Palms for Steak and Seafood. Boucheron in the Venetian tower for a French Bistro experience, and some of the Wynn re staurants as well. We did Corso one night but have tried Okada and SW as well, both excellent. That was our unwind of the day, a relaxing dinner. Did not make it to any of the parties this time. Sort of still recovering from our grand opening last week. For those of you who have visited our new Len Druskin Man in Gaviidae Common over the last week, a big thanks. We look forward to being a part of Minneapolis life for years to come. I will be around until a week from Sunday so maybe I will see some o f you around in any of the three stores over the next week. Happy Holiday Weekend. Till Later, M
VEGAS BABY!
MICHAEL
August 26, 2007
Ok, I know you don't get it. First you don't hear from me for over a week, and then I write for the second time in two days. Could I be coming out of the new store vacuum, so to speak? Maybe that's it. I am in flight to Las Vegas after a short delay. I have a new portable computer that is supposed to link me into my store system to I can do a better job. It was supposed to be ready for the trip. Guess what, technical difficulties. So much for being uber hi-tech this time around. I am enro ute the country's biggest apparel shows of the year, Magic and Project. There are a bunch of other small shows as well. Don't ask me what Magic stands for as I don't remember. I will spend the week looking at what seems like billions of lines and items to find the treasures. I am going to do a lot of looking. Ill keep you posted on my findings. Meantime, day 3 downtown. I am not sure that many realize we are open on Sundays downtown. Sure, we are bucking the masses a bit, as only Sak's Off 5th and Macy's are open. Everybody else and I mean EVERYBODY else is closed. We never were like the rest though. We will stick it out for a while and see. Do the city folk go to the suburbs on Sundays? Such a new market for us. Please email your feedback as always. We are excited about our new store but put it there for all of you. So please let us know if there are things you want there that we are not offering. We will do our best to make it your store of choice downtown. Till Later, M
GAVIIDAE OPENING
MICHAEL
August 25, 2007
Ok, maybe my life will go back to normal now. Then again, was it ever really normal and what is normal anyway? We swung the metal gate doors, albeit a bit smaller than those at the Galleria store, Thursday at 5pm. It was a great feeling to see it happen. We are now officially a part of the Downtown community. We hope we can be part of a renessaince in Downtown shopping. So far so good. Thanks to all of you that have stopped in thus far to check us out or show your support. Beginning this Th ursday and every Thursday we will have Happy Hour at Len Druskin Man at Gaviidae from 4 to 8pm. A time to unwind and hang out and maybe do a bit of shopping. Another Len Druskin first. In addition, we are offering private shopping parties on Tuesdays or Wednesdays to groups of 6 or more with a qualifying reservation. Email coverlie@lendruskin.com for details. We have had a lot of feedback already and keep it coming. We listen and keep evolving based on your feedback and input. Len Druskin Man is for you Twin Cities so enjoy. Yes, we know many of you wanted to know about Len Druskin Woman. Someone even came in today asking where it was located. Do they know something I don't? We are always exploring new opportunities and options so you just never know. Expect other big news from us in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Len Druskin at the Galleria has lots of new arrivals for both men and women. Len Druskin Outlet is fully stocked for the ladies and more mens apparel is arriving soon although a s hipment of mens jeans was just received there. Thanks Twin Cities for all your support. By the way, the Shops issue of Mpls/St. Paul Magazine just came out. I don't photograph well so was a bit skittish. Not terrible I don't think. Time to repack for Las Vegas. Off to the trade shows. Till Later, M
LOS ANGELES
MICHAEL
August 14, 2007
Ok, so Los Angeles sucked me in. That's the truth. We have a lot of exciting things we are working on that you will see manifest themselves in the coming months. We worked our tails off in Los Angeles over the last week. Granted we got a great meal here and there. (More here than there to be truthful.). As always, Koi delivered amazing baked crab hand roles and tuna on crispy rice, A.O.C. had incredible cheese, wine, and small plates, Dominik's for it famous Meatballs, and Toast for one of LA 's best breakfasts (best healthy ones). The Pantry and The Griddle probably beat for the bacon, pancakes, and eggs crowd. Also tried Hungry Cat this trip. Nice laid back scene good food. Was I really meant to be in the restarant business? It's how we unwind after a day of appointments and a short workout. I am really excited about what we are finding. By the way I now realize I misspelled restaurant but don't want to delete all this on the bberry to fix. Should I start asking if the merchandise is "Made in China?". Pretty scary stuff. Another recall today. Let's hope this is not the beginning but the end of this alarming situation. I am will be at the downtown store the next few days working on setup for the opening late next week. Its coming together. Sorry I was unable to write in for a few days. I think all the running in LA will more than make up for my absence over the past week. Till Later, M
35W BRIDGE TRAGEDY
MICHAEL
August 02, 2007
There is little I can say to those who have lost friends or family as a result of this tragic event yesterday. For those still missing loved ones, our thoughts and prayers go out to you. I have been out of town since Sunday and it was very unsettling to not be home sharing in the feeling all Minnesotans were feeling last night. What I will say is the whole country is grieving over the loss of life in the Twin Cities yesterday. We are a strong community and we will rebound and rebuild. That's really all I can say tonight. Till Later, M
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
MICHAEL
July 30, 2007
I am back in NY this week starting Men's Spring 2008. I know, it sounds a bit nuts that I am buying that far out, but that's the reality of this business in some cases. As usual I don't say too much about which lines I am shopping but I will say that the three places I shopped today were amazing and they are three of your favorites. I was pleasantly suprised to be honest. The creative juices at these companies must be really flowing. I was impressed and that's not an easy feat considering that I, like many of you, are bored and feel I have seen and done so much of what is out there. I saw a lot of new concepts, colors, ideas, and fabrics today. That's what my job is about. Although today was long and I did not duck out of my last appt till 8:30ish, it was energizing. Will every appt every day this week be this inspirational? Hard to say. I will keep you in the loop as the week goes on. I know we are receiving fall lately and it is hot but both our stores still have a lot of "wear now" styl es for the heat. Len Druskin Outlet is getting in new stuff this week for hot weather wear to get you through the next few weeks. The main store has summer and early fall stuff that is lightweight as well. Maybe Global Warming really is happening. Its hot this summer. Stay Cool this week. I will keep you posted on what I see. Till Later, M
CRISS CROSS WEEK
MICHAEL
July 26, 2007
The week began Saturday with a trip to NY, crossing Tuesday evening to Los Angeles, and finishing tonight headed back to the Twin Cities. I will be in the Cities until Sunday until I return to New York for six days. What on earth could require so much travel you must be wondering? No, there is no one special in either of these cities, its just work. We have great stuff (at least we think so), but its time for some new ideas to emerge as well. I am taking more time than usual to scour the mark etplace in search of things that interest me, inspire me, seem particularily relevant, or just make me laugh and smile. Sometimes the latter are the things I am fond of the most. Over the last week I found a few real treasures I think. I don't want to spoil it though but will write when each arrives. Many will debut the evening of Aug 23 at our Gaviidae store opening and will appear at out Galleria store the next day. Others, those for the ladies to be specific, will appear over time at the Galleria s tore. Ok, it won't probably quite as exciting as the Krusty O's, the Buzz Cola, the Squishees, or Sprinkalicious donuts that 7-Eleven has in honor of Friday's debut of the Simpson's flick, but we will be darn close. Good thing in my world miles can be considered close. Good thing I have not made my way to 7-Eleven though as it now seems that the way I eat and my weight will impact those close to me. I have just shed 20 pounds. Ill see if my newfound, or rediscovered, habits rub off on those around me . All this travel gives me more time to read magazines and newspapers more than usual. I feel a bit more in touch with what is or is not happening in the world outside of fashion. I regret that I won't see many of you over the next few weeks as I will be continually in markets and preparing for the new store debut later in August. I will be back in the store (and even on the sales floor headset detached) a lot of September and October. My absence from our sales floor over the last months has meant th at I have not seen or spoken to many of you recently. I hope you keep visiting us anyway and working with one of our many great staff members. We also have lots of new faces at our main store, our outlet, and soon to be downtown men's store. All this change is really exciting and will enable us to do great things both in the coming months and the future. I really hope you will all be excited as much with some of my finds as I am. You have come to depend on Len Druskin for cool, fun, and fresh. This coming season will be no exception. Now back to my reading materials. Till Later. M
HP AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS
MICHAEL
July 21, 2007
I felt a big strange yesterday morning when I walked into the Barnes and Noble to get my cup of java. (The line at the neighboring Starbucks was simply too long for my pre joe patience). I could not figure out what all the frenzy was about. I guess I have now exposed that I have never indulged in the whole "Harry Potter" phenomenon. The whole line was to obtain a wristband to attend the evening's HP party and get a copy of the book at 12:01am. I kind of felt that maybe I need to read these boo ks, that I was missing out on some level from something great. I have been trying to read more so maybe this is the time. The momentum appeared to continue last night as dressed partygoers were to be spotted throughout the city. There are few books movies bands or ideas that so embrace popular culture today. Ok, maybe the ipod. I think I will have to partake in the experience. I wonder if it is important to start from the beginning and read them in order. Maybe one of you will write in under "contact us" and let me know. Even this morning when I went to get my mail, there was a stack of HP books freshly delivered waiting to arrive like the morning paper at the door of so many residents. I will have to consider making the commitment to read this 7 book series. I think I will have to get through the new store opening first, however, to make the time. I am on the road again filling last minute needs for the store opening. Was down to take a look today. Looks like good progress is being made. Will keep you posted. I know, once again I said nothing about our clothes or fashion. Had Harry Potter on my mind today though. Its hard to ignore this national phenomenon. Till Later, M
IMITATION IS FLATTERY
MICHAEL

Apparantly other retailers have taken note of my blog. Maybe the got "inspired," so to speak, by my eloquent and stimulating prose. (Lol) At first I was a bit disturbed by the similarities, but then after a bit of thought, I realized that blogs were not my idea. Granted, I was one of the first local retailers to write live from my Blackberry. I definately was not on the early part of the curve with blogs. Just thought it would be another Len Druskin innovation to get the scoop on what was ha ppening in the retail world live and in real time, sort of a dialouge. I will say the other writer is not bad. I will really have to step it up to remain the local retail blog of choice. I know I don't push my store as much as I probably should on here but honestly, who wants to hear me preach about our clothes. You all know we work hard to find cool stuff. Sometimes we do better than others. I'd rarher let you be the judge than spend time trying to convince you how fabulous some new jean is. You are a ll smart enough to come in and decide for yourselves. I have decided I am flattered that someone thought enough of my concept to mimic it. It's too bad they did not hire me as the ghost writer though. A touch of my sarcasm can go a long way. The "me too" syndrome haunts all those with decent ideas. The trick is not to rest on your laurels and keep taking it to the next level. No, that does not mean color photos on the blog or coupons to print if you read it, rather maybe a new idea or concept in the w orking. Good competition is the impetus for stimulating new ideas and fresh concepts. Phil Donahue was the first talk show host in the genre and will be remembered as such. That does not mean that Oprah, or even Jerry Springer, for that matter did not create new niches in the genre. The bottom line is that I should welcome new additions to the local retail blog scene. Its just a matter of ratings then I guess. Too bad Nielson doesn't have a division comapring our hits to theirs. After all, who does n't like to win. (Ok, so I'm a bit competitive). By the way, for the "inspired" soul, who I am guessing reads this now and then, thanks for the complement. Till Later, M
SOUTH BEACH
MICHAEL
July 14, 2007
I have not written in since earlier in the week as I have been sweltering in the heat and humidity of South Beach. I know it sounds posh and hip but it was very hot and humid. I honestly cannot wait till this flight takes off. That could be a while, however, due to radar failure near Jacksonville. Out on the tarmac passing time. What was I doing here if was not on holiday you might ask? I am working on something new and exciting that we will announce in October. Until then you'll just have to wonder or guess. Seems I am always up to something or other. Must be the ADD thing. Good for us entrepreneurial types as it keeps us moving all the time. Checked out some of the hotels down here. Seems like the action is at the Delano, the Lowes, and the Shore Club. Really just too hot in the sun though. Shade is the best option. I thought shopping there was very uninspiring, that is unless you like seeing the same pieces in every store. I think half of Lincoln Road must be owned by one proprieter . Think its really about the nightlife. I did not partake a whole lot in that as I was there for work. Maybe have to revisit at a cooler time of year and just go on holiday to judge it more fairly. Did manage a great sushi meal at Nobu, however, so all was not a loss. I am now enroute back to Minneapolis and will arrive this afternoon. At least the delay was minor. They must have figured I had my fair share of those already this month. Maybe I will see some of you this week either at the outlet or t he main store. Both still have great hot weather wear and a few fall things at each store as well. I will be home for almost 10 days straight, I know, shocking. Till Later, M
THE SHOOT
MICHAEL
July 08, 2007
Tomorrow morning, bright and early at 8:30, I am having my picture taken. No, not to indulge in some odd form of self admiration, but to be placed in a Magazine as part of a story. They apparently don't know that I do not photograph well. My smile always looks so contrived or forced. Is this a genetic flaw ot absence? Maybe that is why I don't own a camera. Too stressful to always be trying to look decent when it just does not want to happen. I guess I could just use a camera to take picture s of others who are not missing the "natual smile gene" but then I always run the risk they will be polite and offer to return the favor or include me. Maybe they won't ask me to smile on the count of three. Maybe I can look more pensive. I am a bit better at that. I really don't know what everyone else will be wearing either. As the article is about style, I am guessing people will be wearing their best. I am just going to be myself. Would any of you really believe me in a suit, excluding the occas sional wedding, funeral, or gala event. I am wearing a tee from American Apparel, Seven Jeans, and a pair of Chuck Taylor's. Simple, easy, classic, comfy. Isn't that what its all about. Curious to see what the rest the group wears. That is what defining style is about anyway, having a point of view and embracing it. I guess I make some sort of statement day in and day out. Hopefully the pic will turn out decent. If you see one without a grin, at least you'll know why. Till Later, M
COMMON SENSE
MICHAEL
July 06, 2007
All this week it seems I am at the gym watching CNN when Glenn Beck comes on. Number one, you all now know that I am not a morning gym person (with the exception of today as I am on this airplane when I would normally be working out) and number two, that I have had the phrase "common sense" rattled in my headphones so many times this week that I'm beginning to buy it. It was just the other day that I spent an hour or more writing a long and taxing email about myself to a magazine. With my luck they will probably excerpt two or three of my weakest comments to print. I am sure I did not answer the questions with the expected responses. Sorry for the segway. Anyway, I was in spell check after really giving this my all and somehow my computer froze and deleted every trace of this email. I was devastated but composed. Years ago I might have flipped out and been a bit vocal but really, I have learned over the years, its just not worth it. I thought that night after listening to Glenn talk over a nd over about common sense that attachments were created for just that reason. Why did I not write the responses in Microsoft Word and save along the way and then attach the document in the email. Novel thought isn't it? That's just what I did the second time around and low and behold it worked effortlessly. Wouldn't it be great if everyday everywhere people always used common sense. Two major issues come to mind: 1) Common Sense is, I suppose, subjective. What is sensible to one person might seem lu dicrious to another. 2) The world as we know it might just be too dull if we all adhered to some underlying notion of common sense that was standardized. I don't think we have to worry much about this happening anytime soon. I do applaud him though for inpsiring me and maybe a few others to think a bit more once and a while about more sensible ways to do things. I think he was intending more to talk common sense from a political viewpoint but I don't do politics on the blog so I'll take something else out of the dialouge. I can't be partial to CNN either. Will have to give Fox News and MSNBC their time as well if I watch something that strikes a chord. I am not really into one vs another. Sometimes its really a matter of one tuning in better at the gym than another without static. Technically, due to the length of tonight's blog, it should have been written in Word and attached. I am not sure this is possible with the way it is set up. Something to check into with my tech wizards I guess. I know , I'm no Andy Rooney. At least I make no pretense as lendruskin.com is no 60 Minutes. Till Later, M

THE POLICE
MICHAEL
July 05, 2007
When I received an email yesterday from someone who said that they were at the police (they did not capitalize), I immediately thought that maybe someone tried to steal the hot new device. As a generation X product myself, I should have known better. It was not until 10:30ish last night when I received a text from a friend saying he was at the police (again not capitalized), that I realized they were at a concert not the precinct. Syncronicity!!! I spent my high school years with Police tapes, yes tapes in that age, and wearing Police tees. Even the fact that just two days ago I put in an order to Junkfood, one of our favorite tee shirt lines, for men's vintage Police concert tees. I'm kind of bummed I did not go to be honest. Too Late. Happy 4th by the way. I just had one of the fastest trips to LA I have ever experienced. I guess there is something to be said to traveling on a slow day in the travel business. Hello to all my friends who are enjoying an outdoor barbeque at Kraig's. Hell o for Los Angeles where it is actually kind of muggy and overcast today. I am by the pool sitting in the shade after hearing the report yesterday on Today about skin cancer and the sun. Today is the opening of Transformers. Someone let me know if it is great or just for someone really into transformers, which I am sorry is not me. I am not anti-transformer, just somewhere in the hinterland between. The big question is whether to try and see fireworks today or just workout and lay low. Either way, happy Independence Day to our great country. For those who chose to shop today, our Galleria store was closed but our Southdale store was open. Tomorrow will come all too fast. Back to the rigeur of the weekly routine. The next two days are more like the center lane on the freeway though than the left lane. Faster but not full speed. If I do anything of interest later I will write in. Till Later, M
TWINS AND IPHONE FEVER
MICHAEL
June 30, 2007
Judging from the line at the Apple store at Southdale yesterday and by how fast our Twins tees are flying off the shelves, these seem to be the items of the week. Bummer for me is that I don't sell Iphones, not yet anyway. What do you all think, should we approach Apple for an Ikiosk like those in the Airport and some of the Macy's stores. We are in a lot of categories but not yet electronics. Hmmm. I am going to wait a bit and stick with my Blackberry and Razor and separate Ipod. I am not su re I want one device for everything. Maybe its a generation thing. Could I write the blog from an Iphone? I hear my few month old Blackberry is already out of date. It's hard to keep up. By the way, the book I bought at the airport the other night never got cracked open. Has another chance on this week's longer flight to LA. For those who feel I need to enhace my vocabulary I guess you should encourage me to read more. I do read but would not consider myself an avid reader compared to some of my fr iends. Maybe they are just hyper readers thus giving me a jaded perspective on the whole thing. Somehow I feel reading is a bit like working out. You either do it a lot or very little. Very few fall in the middle. Maybe that is why moderation of anything is so rare. Just not human nature?? I don't have anything much regarding fashion to report today. I know that I am supposed to write about clothes or accessories or even shoes but today I just have nothing to say about it. I do have some stuff up m y sleeve, so to speak. I just don't want to divlige to much as then you won't be curious to come in and that's the point after all. I am going to go back to chillin and enjoying this spectacular summer evening. Till Later, M
TRAVEL CONTINUED
MICHAEL
June 28, 2007
You guessed it. I am back at the airport for the 4th time since Sunday facing another long delay. I forgot my book this morning though so just went and bought "Absurdistan" by Gary Shteyngart. (What a name that is to remember or pronounce. School must have been tough for this guy). It looked interesting and intellectual enough that I don't feel guilty reading it. I have a bit of a headache but need to pass a few hours so I will make my best effort to dive into it. The NBA Draft is on in the clu b so can catch a bit of that as well. I am still working feverishly on product for fall and holiday and think you will all be happy. I guess I will have to wait and see or you will just have to lie if you think otherwise. I am going to grab a bite and pass some time. Till Later, M
TRAVEL
MICHAEL
June 25, 2007
The travel element of my job lost a bit of its glory since yesterday. I arrived at the airport at 7:20 am for a flight to Chicago and did not get in until 4:30. Don't ask, too long of a story. I am a bit delayed tonight again but so far only 15 minutes. I will keep my fingers crossed. I went for a workout at the Lifetime in Skokie, Illinois near where I was staying. Their Lifetime is light years different from most of our converted Northwest clubs. It is like going to a resort. Will have to see what we get when they renovate the MSP clubs. I started working on beachwear for next Holiday season for those of you who plan to vacation. I like buying vacation clothes. Deciding what someone might like to wear in the Carribean allows me to live a bit vicariously in some form I guess. It's time for me to take a warm weather holiday one of these days, I am long overdue. (Sorry, Los Angeles, you don't count in my world as a vacation spot). I will be back tonight and will go into full party planning mode tomorrow. Our opening party will be amazing I think. It has been a long time since we have thrown a party to celebrate your support and loyalty. After all, without all of you, we would not exist. We want to make it a fun experience for you and your friends so we are planning feverishly. We will keep you posted, of course, as we know more. Anyway, stay cool and enjoy the rest of the week. Apparently I was wrong by the way and Paris did not get 1 million from NBC. Rumor mill problem. She will be on Larry King on Wed for those who care of those who don't care at all. Till Later, (which could be much later if the plane doesn't land soon), M
A MILLION FOR PARIS
MICHAEL
June 22, 2007
Ok, maybe I need to go to jail. Then again, maybe I am not famous enough. On second thought, that last sentance did not need a maybe included. A Million bucks to talk to Paris. All this from the network that brought us Seinfeld and Friends. Hmmm.... Star Magazine watch your back. Just kind of shocked me as did Kathy Griffin on Larry King last night. Quite an interview. I wonder if she'll be invited back? Am I spending too much time on the treadmill, elliptical, stairmaster, bike? Suddenly, I am abrest of all the lastest news and headlines. I just don't get into the political stuff on here as that is forbidden area as business folk. I'll stick to the pop culture stuff. I guess it really rained today. Our DMX music was out for a while. I was shut in the office making plans for our Grand Opening Event at Gaviidae on August 23. Save the date. We will keep you posted. Yes, we know it is the first day of the Minnesota State Fair. Let's see, mini donuts and smelly barn animals or a great part y to wind up summer. I guess you now know I'm not much of a country mouse not that this should come as a giant suprise to those who know me. By the way, to our friends and customers in the GLBT community, Happy Pride! For everyone else, come visit us this weekend. We have a lot of great new stuff at the main store at Galleria and the Outlet at Southdale for hot weather. 90's in store for next week again. Till Later, M
THE COMPUTER
MICHAEL
June 20, 2007
I am very excited today. I learned that I will be able to go live with my new portable computer to all my stores. I know this does not sound like a big deal but I will know longer have to lug around large bags of paper reports. The chances of me becoming a hunchback are slimming as of today. Some days technology amazes me. This is one of those days. I will also be able to be live from my home which will enable me to leave the store now and then. Ok, I know I have not been around quite as much anyway but I think even I am entitled to a life now and then, don't you? Maybe all this technology is great after all. There are days I question its impact on society, business, and culture as a whole. Today I embrace what all the advances in technology have done in improving and enhancing my quality of life. Since I write this blog only from my Blackberry, you would all be denied reading my dialogue week after week without this thing. What was life like for me before the Blackberry? I can't even re member. Maybe I'll even learn to play the xbox or playstation one of these days. Maybe even my ipod will be loaded properly. I suppose I need to start thinking iphone already. I'm not first on the trend curve of technology though so I'll let a few of you get it first. I can't be a leader in every respect. Now on then I have to slip a bit in the background even if it means refraining from speaking my mind. (Ok, so I make some of my famous facial expressions instead). I suppose I should be saying som ething about fashion. Maybe tomorrow. For now, that's it. Till Later, M
STEAK
MICHAEL
June 16, 2007
I admit it. After a few weeks of no red meat, I splurged for a small steak last night. My body needed it I think. I ordered well done, of course. I know, it's not the way one should eat good meat. My mother can be thanked for this one. It was quite slow at the restaurant in LA last night. It's usually packed. I asked why and they told me that summer is slow season for steak in LA. Guess people do fish when it's over 80 there. After almost two weeks of great fish and sushi I needed a break . I am en route home today and spent the better part of yesterday adding orders poolside. A halfhearted day of rest, or half day of rest as the case was. I went to the American Apparel factory in the morning and worked on fall styles. This place is totally amazing. Its really a cool experience to see it. While adding orders I got the chance to reflect on what I had seen over the last two weeks. I am really excited about a lot of it. I don't know that there is one trend in particular but rather a focu s on detail, shape, and novelty. We worked hard to find you fun, wearable stuff at fair prices. We had a few laughs along the way. There are always a few collections each time that rattle our senses and make us wonder what on earth that particular designer was thinking with this delivery. Of course I am sure there are times when you wonder what I was thinking. This is a subjective task so I guess we all have our ups and downs or shifts in point of view. I think this was a great buy for me. I hope you will all agree. I am headed back to hot and humid I understand and have left the 76 and sunny land behind (for a week anyway). I am taking a few hours tonight to meet up with some friends I have not seen in months. I don't think they read this blog. Maybe I need to convince them how interesting and revolational it is. Somehow they just like the dialog better in person. I think it's because then I don't get the last word. By the way, don't forget Father's Day is Sunday, June 17th. More tomorrow as I a ttempt to catch you up from my 10 day hiatus. Till Later, M
DISAPPEARANCE
MICHAEL
June 15, 2007
I have resurfaced. After more than a week of not writing in I am back. I usually write this thing after my workout. I have been traveling in an ensemble cast of sorts until today, however, so was socializing during my usual down time. Their benefit and your loss I guess for the last 10 days or so. I have been in Dallas and LA since I last wrote. I might as well move in the Sofitel LA. I have been here since last Tuesday. Not a bad idea since they have the world's most comfortable beds and a n amazing gym and spa. The new Randy Gerber lounge and Kerry Simon restaurant are exactly difficult to deal with either. My favorite find of the trip is Sloan's Cleaners and Laundry. For a mere few dollars, they washed, dryed, and folded two bags of laundry. They call it "Fluff and Fold.". I wish I could find a place at home to do all my laundry for $10. Maybe I have not looked or tried. I have so much to tell you all so I will have to write a lot over the coming days to catch up. I guess I missed th e opportunity to be the Twin Cities correspondant on the "Paris Debate." Oh well, I am sure I can find much more to discuss. What's with the 54 million dollar pant lawsuit by the way? Hmmm..... Till Later, M
TB
MICHAEL
June 01, 2007
What a week. From "The View" banter to Lindsay's mishap, to the TB scare, it has been a busy newsweek. I guess I am more aware of America's current news talk these days as I am at the Gym more often. I am re-entering the world of news while on the treadmill. Ok, sometimes I slip and turn to a TV drama or just listen to tunes, but for the most part I try and catch up on the news. The gym is not only good for my health, my muscles, and my sanity, but it turns out that it also keeps me in the loo p on current events. Who knew? Its almost like a guilty pleasure escaping from work each day and getting in a good workout whether it be weights or cardio. Experts and the media tout the benefits of physical excercise everyday. Although it is hard to get initally motivated and over the "hurdle", so to speak, turns out they are right. They never mention all the cool clothes that you can suddenly wear. Will our mdse change as my daily routine has changed. I can't be sure. I leave for a 11 day trip to morrow. I do follow the reports and the numbers I am given by my great team. Some of my job, however, is governed by senses and emotion. It will be interesting to see if the changes I have made over the last few months in my daily life impact the merchandise on our salesfloor. We will have to wait and see I guess. I am part businessperson and part artist. I guess the balace is key to the job. Today's blog is what SNL might call "Deep Thoughts". I had to lighten it up a bit. I will be in LA for the better part of a week. I am not sure who will be out and about as half of young Hollywood is now out of commission. I am sure I will find something to do. I will keep you posted on anything great at market or in my travels. I'm off to pack. Till Later, M
MEMORIAL DAY
MICHAEL
May 28, 2007
Today we remember those who have fought for our country. Many have the day off in order to commemorate those that have lost their lives in battle. The news chanels have spent the week covering the whole Rosie vs. Elizabeth thing. I spent the better part of last night purging my closets. Needless to say, I will be heading to the Salvation Army in the morning. Do you ever go through your closet and say to yourself, what was I thinking. I have done a lot of that in the last 24 hours. Were leat her pants ever cool? When did I ever think I looked great in side lace up shirt? A lot of nostalgia behind two doors. More than 10 years of my life before my eyes. (Ok, so I waited a bit too long to do this. You already know I procrastinate so now you have more proof) I do feel relieved now that my car is packed with bags for charity. It is hard to do but a good feeling when done. Now it is time for me to relax, take a few hours off (don't laugh) and just be. Till Later, M
FRIDAY
MICHAEL
May 25, 2007
Yet another Friday has arrived. It was a decent day other than the phone ringing off the hook for no apparent reason and getting a parking violation from the Galleria when I ran back to get my briefcase after working out. I thought most of the vendors would be closed today biut I was apprently mistaken as people called all day trying to get me to book appointments to see their wares. Some days it just seems like I need a break from evaluating clothes. Maybe a movie this weekend? Is there anyth ing great showing? I have not been to the movies in a while. Maybe laundry. I have a ton a laundry to do and I guess laundry can be relaxing (lol). Maybe read a bit of Ian Mc Ewen's "Saturday" that I started in Philly last week? Whatever it is I will hopefully get a bit of a diversion this weekend. No, that doesn't mean I am taking a day off this weekend don't worry. At any rate, enjoy your weekend, relax, unwind, and of course, shop!! Till Later, M
ALARM
MICHAEL
May 21, 2007
For those of you that think my life is glamourous, tonight is a strong reminder that it can be otherwise. After a long day, a workout at the gym, and a return to the store I headed downtown. No sooner did I sit down to eat than the security company called that the burglar alarm was going off. Thus, another trip back to Edina. I am happy to report that it was a mislocked door but have to say that three trips to Edina today was just too many. I do really like my job but today tested my diehard s pirit a bit. The good news of the day is somebody at the gym asked me to spot their 250 bench press. I guess all this working out does pay off. Maybe he was put there to keep me inspired. In any case, this week we finalize plans for the downtown store as construction starts in approximately two weeks. We are also finalizing product mix for Fall/Winter. I think most of you will really like the changes and enhancement to out merchandise mix this fall. I say most as I realize I can't please everyone all the time. We can try though. A few new arrivals of intetest: Men's- Giant Player Ralph Lauren Polos, Asics Gel Running Shoes, Ever summer tees, Quicksilver Cotton/Linen Cargo Shorts, and Cobian Flip-Flops. Women's - New Diane Von Furstenburg Summer, More Hudson Wide Leg Trousers, New Colors Juicy Terry, Michael Stars Summer Stripes, and Haviananas Flip-Flops. Lots of new summer ware for weekend, beach, or special occasion. There, now I have done what I guess I am supposed to do, sell clothes. Till Later, M

BLACK SWANN GREEN
MICHAEL
May 17, 2007
For those of you who read my blog consistently, I promised the name of the book I was reading that had escaped me as I have just started. I finihsed on the flight to Philadelphia last weekend and the name of it is Black Swann Green. And no, it is spelled Swann so this is not another gramatical slip on my part. It is written by David Mitchell and reminds me a bit of the Nick Horsby books for those of you familiar with those. I am trying to read more for two reasons. 1)To stimulate my mind with thoughts outside of apparel. 2) to enrich my vocabulary so I keep the dialogue of this blog intriguing. I traveled to NY each day this week aboard Amtrak and lived the commuter life, so to speak. I, as always, feel I had a successful and productive week. Sometimes, however, you prove me wrong when the stuff arrives. I sometimes think when the boxes arrive that I somehow lapsed into temporary insanity during some of the appointments. I think so much of it depends on the feeling at the moment. At this moment I feel like I did it right this week. At this moment I am also noshing on edamame ravioli at Buddakhan in Philadelphia's Old Town. It is amazing. I thought it was healthy until they mentioned the edamame is combined with butter and cream. Figures, too good to be true. I still recommend a splurge if your travels take you to Philly. The food here is amazing. Till Later, M
PHILADELPHIA
MICHAEL
May 14, 2007
Due to insanely high hotel rates this week in the Big Apple, I decided to stay in Philly and take the train in each day to market this week. Day one went fairly smoothly, other than this morning's Amtrak train running 40 minutes late. It was a spectacular day in both New York and Philadelphia. My appointments went fairly quickly today as maybe I finally know what you are looking for. Somehow I think that is too good to be true, but for the present moment I will accept that as a possible truth i n my universe. I got back in time to workout and walked down the street to grab a bite. I am on restaurant three, not necessarily in any pecking order. Everyplace is packed. Maybe Monday is just not a Minnesota thing. I can't remember the last time I had trouble getting into three restaurants in Minneapolis on a Monday night. I am at a place called Tria. Seems to be a small plate type of place. Nice vibe. I suppose you are wondering if I had some fashion revolation today. The answer is no. Saw som e cool wearable clothes you will like. That is the extent of it. Kind of nice to have a change of pace and check out a different city. For those of you who read my blog last week, no I did not make it to my reunion and ironically, I landed in Philadelphia just one day after it ended. Ok, so I have not completely reprioritized my life. Doesn't just contemplating it count as one step in the right direction. Till Later, M
LA
MICHAEL
May 10, 2007
Ok, I have nothing to brag about. It sounds like it was just as beautiful there the last two days as it was here. I did get the overwhelming joy of sitting on the plane yesterday, however. Got a great book to read though the name of it is escaping me at the moment. Bought it at the airport where, believe it or not, there are some decent selections in the main concourse bookstore. Sometimes I forget about how wonderful reading a good book can be. I will let you all know the name of it tomorrow or Saturday when I write in. Today was a sort of "rounding out" day. Finish the early deliveries so we have what you want when you want it. This weekend we are working on the fixture plan for the downtown location. We are also finalizing plans for the concept as a whole. This is your last chance to write in and give us feedback on anything you want to see there. Sorry, open bar is out of the question. In any case, I am in the hotel lobby for a cocktail while I write this blog. I am told I must be ou t of the area by 8:30 as they are having a private party. When I inquired if it is for anyone or anything of interest, I was told that they are holding a premier party for the new Luke and Owen Wilson movie. Since apparently I am not on the "A" list, I will have to stargaze from the valet area. Till Later, M
REUNION
MICHAEL
May 05, 2007
I remembered the other day, thanks to the power of email, that my 15 year college reunion is next weekend. Ok, so now I guess you will all know how old (or how young) I am. The whole idea of 15 years time kind of hit me. I decided to click on the "Those Already Registered" icon to see if I knew anyone going. I went to the 10 with a friend and really did not see anyone I knew. I noticed two friends of mine were going. I have been meaning to email them both for years. I have been out of touch for so long. It is amazing how we can get caught up in day to day life and kind of just get sucked in by it. Things on the perimeter just get too far out as the wheel of life speeds up. Clicking on that icon earlier this week really served as the impetus for me to slow down my wheel, so to speak. Fashion is my job, and I guess my life to some extent, but balance is crucial to doing anything well. Will I go next weekend to my reunion, or at least to the party, and cut my LA buying trip by a day or am I merely conceptualizing this whole "balance" thing. I will keep you psited later this week. I guess by now many of you might have gathered that I am a bit (lol) of a procrastinator. I guess its a better bad habit than, for instance, being late as it does not affect anyone but me. That is unless you are a vendor waiting for an order and you have no idea what I am giving you until 5 minutes before the deadline. I have always felt that the longer you wait to do something, the better base of information y ou might have so you achieve the best possible outcome. Now I sound a bit like a statistician. I think it best if I cut off here for two reasons. One, because I have really said almost nothing about the store. Two, because it is Cinco de Mayo. Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone. Till Later. M
DOWNTOWN
MICHAEL
May 01, 2007
Today it hit me that we will be opening Downtown in August. It has just been a concept out there in some "alternate dimension" up till today I think. Somehow on my way back from picking up my Spicy Tuna Roll at Crave, I realized that I might be downtown getting lunch soon. I have been doing my thing in Edina for about 15 years and Len for over 30. I can't wait to be part of the city and its day to day life. I have never had the chance to walk to work. What a change this will be for our compa ny. We are in planning phase for the new store. Any good ideas please write in soon under contact us. We want to make it "your store." I know, sounds a bit corney but it is true. We want you to feel at home there. Shop, hang out, embrace life in general. Len Druskin Man will be part of downtown life, culture, and shopping beginning late Summer. I, for one, can't wait. Till Later, M
A BEAUTIFUL DAY
MICHAEL
April 29, 2007
What a great day. Almost 80 and some sunshine through the clouds. We are going to spend the week making sure we have enough warm weather stuff for all of you. From such a long winter it looks like it could be a hot summer. We will have plenty of warm weather clothes in both our main store and our outlet in the coming months. Even though many of our vendors would like to have us show fall in June, we will make sure we have enough "wear now" apparel to meet your needs. I guess tonight I feel l ike a paid advertisement rather than a blog. I have been accused of rambling. Who says rambling can't be interesting? We should be happy we don't have to face the commuting issues tomorrow of so many Bay residents in California. At least it was not a busy time on the road when this tragedy occurred. Very scary situation. For those of you who read the "Best in the Cities" in City Pages, apparently we didn't win this time. Can't be loved by everyone I guess although we do try. Looks like the warm is here to stay so maybe we will see those of you who have put off spring shopping this week. In any event, enjoy the shorts and flip-flops weather. I know I did today. Till Later, M
SPRING?
MICHAEL
April 27, 2007
It would appear as if in typical Minnesota style we have all but skipped Spring and leaped right into Summer. No complaints here, however. We have a lot of great summer stock. Dresses, shorts, skirts, and tees for women. Shirts, tees, shorts, and boardshorts for guys. Also, lightweight summer denim for men and women. I must admit I am a bit tired this evening so this entry may not be my finest. It was quite busy today and we had a number of vendors visit the store. We are starting to hear you ask about how our Downtown store will be different from our Galleria Location. For the most part, you will find the same great brand and service that you have come to expect from us over the years. There will be some brands found only at Galleria and some found only at Gaviidae. We have a great designer for our Gaviidae spot so we think you will be happy with the space. Expect a few changes at our Galleria store as well. Can't say too much yet. Many of you are really excited about our city store. We are as well. Keep the comments flowing as we want to make it "your" store. Til Later, M
FUN
MICHAEL
April 21, 2007
Since no one must have overheard anything of interest today, I am sticking to yesterday's intention to title today's entry Fun. Seems a bit counterintuitive at the moment I must admit. It is 10pm and I just rolled out of work and am at the bar at Azia grabbing a bite. Sat down next to a Len Druskin fan who recommended a special drink. Called the Saint Theresa (her name for it), it's a pomegranite juice martini with vanilla vodka. I am not big on sweet drinks but this quite refreshing. I just a sked them to hold the flower. Seemed a bit overboard and although it was quite warm today, we are not in Hawaii. I have, as usual, segwayed from my topic which is Fun. I bring this word up because it is a pivotal notion in our company's direction. Not only do we strive to make our shopping experience entertaining when you come in our stores, but we try to find clothes that have spirit as well. I think for a few seasons we got a bit serious, even somber, in our selections. We have gone back to the fun, spirited stuff you all expect from us. This is season is a leap forward. Fall is going to be amazing. We have to enjoy summer first though so we are keeping our fall plans under wraps for now. In the meantime, enjoy the summer weather this weekend. My potstickers have arrived. Till Later, M
LE DRUNKEN MEN
MICHAEL
April 20, 2007
I have been introduced as of a few hours ago to a website I was not familiar with, www.overheardinminneapolis.com. Check out the listing overheard in City Center today for a good chuckle. Thanks to the ladies who had the conversation. You made my day. I really like it. We are planning for the new store to be a great experience and a fun place to go so maybe you are not that far off. There are so many websites these days it's hard to keep up. By the way, apparently I am offending some of you with spelling and gramatical errors here and there. For those who don't know, not that I have to explain, I write this from my Blackberry. I don't proof as this new Bberry doesn't allow me to go to the middle of a line and insert or delete. (Unless I have not figured out how to do it on this model yet which is entirely possible as well). It also does not have spellcheck so I guess its time to invest in a pocket sized dictionary so I don't have to guess when I want to sound a bit more schooled. I did att end the Ivy League so maybe I should get a refund?? I write from my den, airports, taxis, buses, barstools, and miscellaneous other spots when I feel like I have something to say. Not that I am usually at a loss for words. (Lol). On a sports note, thanks to the Minnesota Wild for another great season. We are sorry it ended but look forward to next year although that means the return of cold and snow so I guess we are entitled to a break. On a fashion note, (Was this blog supposed to be about fashion) we have a phenomenal dress selection in for women and awesome shirts for guys. Its great to see all the women into dresses again and they guys wearing all the cool shirts. It's spring so it's time to have some fun with our clothes. Fun, tomorrow's topic I think. That's unless I hear someone has posted something better on the Overheard Minneapolis website tomorrow. Who ever said evesdropping was a bad idea? Till Later, M
DOWNTOWN
MICHAEL
April 18, 2007
After spending the morning downtown with my store designer Lisa, I decided that I should end my day (well I guess I really always truly end my day here because I live here) by grabbing a bite downtown. No better place to stop than 112 Eatery. Very full upon my arrival but 1/2 glass of Rioja into the wait a spot opened up. It's amazing how coveted a spot at their bar can be. Are the fitting rooms at Len Druskin that coveted. Maybe on Saturday afternoons. Anyway, Downtown. A new Len Druskin. I am challenged to bring the brands, service, and style you are accustomed to from us. Yet I feel somewhat compelled to take it to the next level. I have a few ideas but will have to see if my ideas are tangible and valid to you. We are really excited to be part of downtown. I am a city mouse at heart so it is a natural for me. I will update you from time to time on how things are progressing. In the meantime come visit our Galleria main store or Len Druskin Outlet in Southdale for great new Spring stuff. Now that the sun is shining its time to shop. (Or maybe spend some time outside but of course shopping first so you have new clothes to wear in the sun.). Stop in the next few days. I will be around and look forward to seeing you. Till Later, M
NEW YORK
MICHAEL
April 17, 2007
Somehow I arrived in NY only 10 minutes behind schedule last night. Thanks to some quick work by United's great gate agent at O'hare, I snuck on the 4 o' clock departure that was not leaving until 7:45pm. It wasn't even on the screen. I heard my name called and they asked if I wanted to hop on this flight. Sounded great being that my 7:05 was running hours late. Stayed at the W Lexington avenue for the first time. Busy bar scene both in the Whiskey Bar and the Lobby Bar. Decent people watchi ng for a monday night. The only issue was some lost sleep due to being given a single size bed. Who are they made for? The bed was not even as long as my body. Maybe they don't give the best rooms to people only staying one night. Guess I would give them another shot. Today consisted of a smorgasboard of random appointments. From True Religion to Buffalo to Paper Denim and Cloth to Sue Wong to Calvin Klein to Polo by Ralph Lauren. Ok, who said my store makes sense. As long as it makes sense to me a nd to you, I guess I won't worry about the non-believers, so to speak. Not that we are a religion, but we are sort of have a distinctive shopping culture at Len Druskin and a particular style. I guess that is what makes us different and makes it fun to shop. It was hard to concentrate on the clothes completely today and my mind and conversation kept segwaying into the terrible tragedy at Virginia Tech. I did not make my first appointment on time as I was glued to Matt and Merideth letting us get a glim pse of what had happened. I have not been able to get all of today's developments in one sitting but have heard bits and pieces. Truly very sad and very tragic at the same time. All of us at Len Druskin are thinking about the loss of the families and friends of the innocent who were killed and injured at Virginia Tech. its hard for me to try and tell you what I saw today as it seems trivial at this moment. Of course life does go on and has to but maybe I just needed a moment to reflect on the tragedy. It seemed appropriate. At any rate a long string of delays prompted another really great United Reservations agent to get me a seat on American's flight to Ohare so I would not miss my connection tonight. Turns out it will be delayed as well. I am a bit crunched in as I gave up my Economy Plus seat on United for a regular seat on AA. For those who don't know, most United Flights have Economy Plus seats. It's about 5 inches of extra legroom. Really nice for all 6'3" of me. Just in case you are wond ering we do use NWA as well but lately have been splitting our business for a variety of reasons. (That's the diplomatic way of saying that its not worth 800 bucks to cut an hour of flying time out). I have probably rambled too much already. I did promise Chip, Shannon, and Rosemary at Polo/Ralph Lauren a big hello. Apparently they too had read this blog from time to time unbenounced to me. The funny thing is that I asked the first few weeks for people tow write in and tell me what they thought or what they wanted more of. Maybe I should thicken my skin first of maybe no one wants to admit to reading it. Either way, I will be writing in more often now that I know somebody looks. I don't sell on my website so I guess I have to give you all a reason to check it out. In closing tonight, my thoughts go out to the families and friends of all the victims of the Virginia Tech Shootings and the whole community itself. Till Later, M
HITS
MICHAEL
April 16, 2007
Now that our new COO is digging in I feel like I am being enlightened every day. Today I found out for the first time since this site went live a few months ago, how many hits we are getting on it in any given period of time. I am now up to date on the difference between hits, visits, etc... It is amazing how much more inspiring it is to write when someone is listening, or reading, in the case. I suppose its somewhat like taking hours to cook a really special meal when you know that you can't sha re it with others. Its hard to be motivated to do it. Apparently more of you are checking out the site than I thought. Maybe not everyone reads the blog but for those that are interested in my speak I guess I now feel more compelled to write in. I am sitting on the plane at Ohare waiting to take off for NY. I got lucky, my plane is running late but I jumped on the early one that is just leaving. Short trip, home tomorrow night. It's market week at Polo/Ralph Lauren. They seem to be out of sync with many of my other lines. I guess when your Ralph Lauren you call your own shots. No complaints, they have a spectacular showroom on the Upper East Side that has incredible furnishings and feels like a Polo Club in New England. Kind of an experience in itself. I figure one of these markets I will catch a glimpse of Ralph. So far nothing gives. Maybe he is behind one of the giant dark wood walls. I will write in tomorrow from Laguardia and let you know if there is a sighting. Also seeing True Religion tomorrow. Know for many of you this is one of your favorite lines. You will be happy to know the line is under new design direction and looks better than it has in years. In addition, they have some amazing vests and jackets for both men and women. You will have to wait for winter though and I am sure after this last season most of you are willing to wait. I have a lot more to tell you about changes at the store but they are going to make the door closing announcement momentarily. Till Later, M
RESURFACING
MICHAEL
April 13, 2007
Ok, I disappeared for a few weeks. I think I was just tapped from so much going on. We have a lot to tell all of you. First and foremost, a new Len Druskin will open late summer in Gaviidae Common in Downtown Minneapolis. It will be called Len Druskin Man and will be an all men's apparel, footwear and accessories store. If you want to know why all men's, read this Sunday's Star Tribune. If I told you here I think I would be stealing their thunder. We are really excited to be part of the Downt own community and I am looking forward to being able to walk to work once and a while. Other big news is that we have a new Chief Operating Officer, Todd Stoffel. Todd has previously worked at Lifetime, Depatment 56, and Target Corporation. I have taken the title of CEO. I am supposed to feel different now? So much for titles. Todd will be taking over much of the day to day store operations and finance side of our company. This will give me more time to be back on the salesfloor and of course more t ime to write the blog. Other news is Len Druskin Outlet has a lot of new mdse from the main store and a lot of special purchase mdse as well. We are really excited about Len Druskin Outlet as the new alternative to discount shopping in town. I think you will agree if you visit in the next few weeks. I have a lot more to say but I guess I will save some for the next few days. I've resurfaced and will write in more often again. Thanks for checking the blog out again. Till Later, M
CHICAGO
MICHAEL
March 11, 2007
Ok folks, I admit I have been really bad. It's not that I have nothing to say because as many of you know I can keep going on and on. Yes, lol a bit. I think having too much to say has got to be better than having nothing to say at all. The admitted reality of the deal is that I have been running around and writing so many business emails that I peter out by the time this faces me. I also wonder whether anybody is reading it. I am in Chicago, Wheeling to be exact, tonight for a trade show tomo rrow and Tuesday. Don't say I don't go anywhere to find great stuff. So maybe I got a bit complacent the last few seasons. Maybe went off on too many tangents. Live and learn. Spring is looking back on track for us. For those who thought we were getting a bit serious, dark, and dull its time to visit us again. We are back to having a lot of cool easy great wearable stuff. The weather is warming up so its time to come in. Many of you have come in over the last two weeks and applauded our return to our roots so to speak. Just wait till you see what is coming. We have some big suprises in store and will keep you posted. In the meantime, enjoy what seems to be the beginning of spring. Till later, M
ROUTINE
MICHAEL
February 17, 2007
What is a routine like in life. It is hard for me to know as my feet rarely stay put in one city for more than 10 days at a time. I am taking a break from all the running for a bit. Don't buyers deserve lives as well. I skipped the big Magic show in Vegas for the first time in almost 8 years. (Don't ask me what Magic stands for because I don't know) It was amazing to me how much I could accomplish with internet access from my own desk. I actually started a routine, if you can even call it that, for a week now. I have been to the gym five times this week. I feel like a real person again. I may even see some of my long lost friends again this week as I will be home again. Last week, I was too worn out one night so I admit I bailed on a Happy Hour I had committed to with friends at the new Bulldog NE. That night, after working late (what's new), I went to PF Changs. I sat at the bar, had a bite, and then the clanker. I opened my fortune and actually found it so appropriate for the moment. It read "a quiet evening with friends is the best tonic for a long day." Ok, so maybe they are pushing it with quiet. I guess they have not met all my friends. If I have this much to say it should come as no suprise that my friends should not be referred to as quiet. Maybe while they are sleeping this adjective could be used. At any rate, I decided that next time I won't cancel. Maybe if I had Chinese once a week I will be smarter for it? By the way, after seeing the City Pages review of Little Schezuan (sp?) in St. Paul, I am really wanting to try it. I hear it is great. What does all this have to do with Len Druskin or fashion, very little I guess except that my state of mind at any given time will influence what the store and the merchandise is about. I am in a different frame of mind than I have been when going into buying past seasons. Come fall you will have to give feedback on how it turned out. I guess maybe it will be easier just to track sales performance, but hearing from you is much more interesting. I don't think I am winning any popularity contests with the vendors right now as I am skipping the circus of trade shows this month. Then again, I am really employed by the customer. It is you guys I have to keep happy and engaged. I will keep trying to do just that. Till Later, M
GRAMMY NIGHT
MICHAEL
February 11, 2007
It's Grammy night so many of you are home watching the awards relaxing or spending the night with friends almost as a warm up for the Academy Awards later this month. It was a calm weekend for me other than my headlights are malfunctioning so need to call the dealership in the AM. I don't think you want to be the driver in front of me tonight. Its a good thing not many are out tonight. I just left work as it was a good day to clean up the office and organize. Its such a great feeling when ever ything is where it is supposed to be. That must be the bit of OCD in me talking. I think you have to be a bit "neurotic" to keep on top of this business I have chosen. So much to cover all the time. It seems many of you are going on "holiday," as the Brits say, soon. We have a bigger selection of men's surf and swim than we have had in the past. By April, the ladies will find a larger selection of swim as well. This is all part of our function focus moving forward. Many of you also scored at our Outlet this weekend. For those of you who have not made it there yet, there is still tons of great stuff from 50 to 90 percent off. Stop by in the next few weeks for a bargain or two (or more if you feel so inclined). My food just arrived (I am sitting at the bar in Azia just in case you wondered) so I am going to sign off. I am going to try and support this blog thing since it was a challenge to put on the site. Please write in and let me know what you want to hear. I got a new Blackberry this week and the keys are smaller so you will have to excuse the typos till my fingers adjust. Till Later, M
FREAKY WEEK
MICHAEL
February 09, 2007
It has been a strange week. The death of Anna Nicole, the Astronaut seeking vengance in the diaper, two more feet of snow coming this weekend to Buffalo, NY, and NY Fashion week all part of this very newsworthy week. What does this say about the upcoming year. So much for Groundhog day being the most exciting event of this frigid month. I noticed in the paper this week a big article about Macy's fashion trend director spending fashion week in 0ny running briskly from show to show in an effort to predict the trends of the upcoming season. Well my friends, we decided to sit the next few weeks of shows out. As we are considered one of the city's most "trend-driven" stores, you might ask how we can stay on top of things while hanging out here in the "antarctic?". Truth be told, we are beginning to wonder how so much of the runways really means anything in terms of clothes for the lifestyles we live day to day. Sure the shows themselves are manytimes creative wonders as are many of the designs. All of this is inspirational and aspirational at the same time. We have decided, however, that for the time being, we will set the trends buy being driven by function first, fashion second. I feel the industry is trying to push you to continuously change your style week after week, month after month as part of the attempt to sell more product and make things new and fresh. The big question is have things started moving so fast that it is simply all a big blur to us all. Maybe all we really want is to f eel great and be comfortable at the same time. Is that too much to ask the designers of today?I have decided this year our buying team will start markets a month later than usual as we work on our list of what we think is important to you for Fall 07. The first question in our minds is making a list of what it is you do everyday. The list ranges from work, vacation, the gym, running errands, hanging out at home, business trips, parties, nights out on the town, etc... Basically when you look at such a l ist, you realize that what they are showing on the runways is not relevant or translatable to most of your lives. I am making your needs our primary focus and filtering in the trends where they apply and translate. You may see less runway drives style, but you will find more of what you reallyu wear. We are committed to finding the best selection on cool, great fitting, affordable, wearable clothing, footwear, and accessories for the store. We may suprise you come fall with a few brands you might be su prised to see but that is what Len Druskin is all about anyway. We can't let the cat out of the bag just yet as the "copycat" stores will be following suit behind us I am sure. You have come to expect great things from us and the coming seasons will be no exception. Over the past few seasons we have listened to you verbally and from your purchasing on what you really want from us. We have listened. Just wait and see. We may not be on page 1 of the strib, but we realize that you know we are truly the "trendsetters," so to speak. Thanks again for all your support. By the way, we just took additional markdowns on Fall at the Southdale store. Lots of stuff 75 to 90 percent off beginning today. We hope to see you this weekend. We also have a lot of new arrivals at our main store in Galleria. I have been floating back and forth so maybe will see you over the next few days. I guess maybe its easier to justify buying something new when you just scored a bargain at the outlet. Till Later, MD.
MARKET
MICHAEL
January 31, 2007
I have already failed in keeping my "blog resolution." Just got so caught up in market that I was too drained. After talking and talking all day it is hard to keep expressing myself. It is much easier to have a bit of down time and then have a great dinner. Checking out new restaurants or old favorites is definately a high point of my job, as well as all the great people I come in contact with every day. David and I just returned from Men's market oin NY. We worked hard to find great function al clothes for next fall that were cool, modern, masculine, and wearable. I will not tell you we loved a lot of what we saw. We were very selective. A lot of charcoal and black with light blue and white as accents. Easy and wearable. Many of you will be happy to know that we are bringing J. Lindeberg back home to Len Druskin. We will have both the dress pants, dress shirts, and jackets as well as some items to go with jeans from the jl sport divison. It will begin arriving early August. We are happ y J. Lindeberg is returning to its roots and are happy to be partners with them again. We think you will like what you see from them. We are also happy to tell you we have convinced Seven to offer more extra long jeans for men beginning with fall. For those of you interested in either of these things just shoot us and email under contact us and we will make a note to contact you when it comes in. That wasn't so hard after all. Till Later. M
THE BLOG BLAH'S
MICHAEL
January 18, 2007
So you are probably wondering how I got burned out so fast on the blog. Is it sort of like a new years resolution where you go overboard at first and then get burned out. Maybe I need to space it better. Three times a week seems more reasonable. Maybe the gym and the blog can be alternate days of the week with one day of rest. That might work. I guess the next step is to figure out the days. The travel always messes with me too. I am on market madness again at the moment and its hard to sti ck to a routine. I signed on to this new gig though so I guess I need to follow through. Look for a new entry sometime Saturday, probably to be written on the plane to NY. We are going to look at men's fall 2007. Hard to believe. Till Later, M
SECOND LIFE
MICHAEL
January 02, 2007
I have been reading about this new virtual website "Second Life" I believe it is called. I first noticed it in the Harvard Business Review a few weeks ago while sitting on the airplane reading. Then I saw it mentioned again in another magazine, and last night overheard a conversation about it while sitting at a bar downtown. What is this all about. Apparently, up to half of a million people are logged in at any time. It is a virtual world where you create a second life, so to speak. You creat e a person and live another life, a virtual one. You can apparently shop, work, buy real estate, and of course, sell clothes. I have not had the chance to check it out but plan to do so in the next few days. Maybe we will have a virtual "Len Druskin" where you can buy virtual jeans. Doesn't your alter ego need to look great too? It seems that this "second life" would be very time consuming. I guess that rules me out. I will have to live in the "physical world" for now. Till Later, M
NEW YEAR'S EVE/DAY HOURS
MICHAEL
December 31, 2006
Both the Len Druskin store at Galleria and the Len Druskin Clearance store at Southdale will be open New Year's Eve and New Year's Day from 10-5. There are new spring arrivals at the main store and new markdowns at the Clearance store. Join us in celebrating the new year.
DREAMGIRLS
MICHAEL
December 26, 2006
Like many of you, I spent time yesterday with family and at the movies. I went to the much anticipated opening of Dreamgirls. Not having seen the broadway version, I had little to compare it to. I thought is was well done. They made a smooth transition from stage to screen and took advantage of the talent of the stars. Beyonce, Eddie Murphy, and Jennifer Hudson were standouts. Len, who had seen the stage version of the show on broadway, was suprised the audience was not more interactive. My fr iend in Chicago said people at the theaters there were cheering and applauding after the major scenes. Are we really that reserved here? Apparently so, at least at the suburban location where I viewed the film. No major clothing trends stand out from the film. Just a great movie sneaking in just in time to get the attention of the Academy. That's how I spent X-mas day and watching the Lakers-Heat game a bit. Hope all of you enjoyed the day as well whether you were celebrating the holiday or just enjoyin g a day off. Till Later, M
SNOW
MICHAEL

The first snow of the season. Usually welcome but during the holiday countdown a shopper's and retailer's nightmare. It seemed despite slippery and snowy conditions on the roads, many of you braved the elements and came out to shop. We hope everyone got where they needed to go safely. We have put on some extra staff tomorrow to wrap as we know many of you were unable to chose not to deal with traffic today. We have received restocks and new items during the week and have a lot to choose from to find "the perfect gift." Remember we have free gift wrap and really nice paper to boot. The snow should be done falling by the time we open tomorrow and we will be ready to assist you with all your last minute needs. Hope to see you in the next few days. Till Later, M
HOLLYWOOD
MICHAEL
December 18, 2006
Today I ponder how much it means to you if Hollywood is into a brand of the moment. It seems to me more of you are voting to stick to the brands you like, fit into your lifestyle, and have great fits and fabrics. Every week I open the magazines and search the net to see what is new and getting "buzz.". Lately it seems there is less and less to talk about. The brands we know and embrace in many cases are simply the best. There is no reason to swtich for a minute in time anymore. It just does not seem to matter as much as it used to me or to you. Of course it is always good to try new things and expand our horizons. It just has to "mean something," so to speak. We are not going to jump to a new brand of teddy grahams just because there is a new choice. It has to taste better, maybe have fewer calories than the original, or maybe be just as good but less expensive. Otherwise, we really don't need it. The short of this story si that we will be trying new things for Spring and Summer but only t hose we feel have merit. We have selected the best brands and styles so that you can shop easier and feel less overwhelmed. You are speaking, we are listening. Keep writing in, we appreciate all your feedback. Till Later, M
THE SECURITY TAG
MICHAEL
December 16, 2006
Ok, so here's the deal. We leave a tag on someone's skirt. We, meaning I, drive to the customer's home to remove the tag so they can wear it out tonight as planned. This obviously does not happen every day (at least I hope not) but it shows how committed we are to making sure our customers are satisfied with their experience and our service. We certainly fall short now and then but will do our very best to recifty the issue in a timely manner. Our service and commitment to you, our customers, is unparalleled. We don't often tout ourselves but tonight just felt like the cameras should have been rolling. I hope all of you enjoy the evening or Sunday, whichever it may be. Till Later, M
GIFT SHOPPING
MICHAEL
December 15, 2006
We have been helping your friends and family all day pick out gifts for many of you. We hope you like them. Our customer history allows us to track previous purchases, brands, sizes, and colors selected. With this information our sales team helps select what we think you might like. We can't be right 100% of the time but we strive to do our best to put "winners" in the gift givers hands. By the way, for those of our customers who observe it, Happy Hanukah. It is just one of the holidays we will be helping all of you celebrate this month. Our gift wrappers will be here all weekend and thru next week to make your shopping as painless as possible. If you wrap as poorly as I do, leaving with a wrapped package is a definite relief. It has not felt much like the holidays with the balmy weather but I am sure winter will come soon enough. Our clearance store at Southdale also has lots of great fall and winter stuff as well as some resortwear in stock now at 50% to 90% off regular price. Although purchases at the outlet are not refundable, a Len Druskin gift card is a perfect gift idea if you have doubts about what to get that special someone. Gift cards are for sale in any increment at both our main Galleria Store and our Outlet at Southdale. Check Southdale or Galleria's websites for special holiday hours over the coming weeks. Both stores will be open New Year's Day. We hope to help you with whatever is still on your gift list over the next 10 days. Till Later, M
OPTIONS
MICHAEL
December 13, 2006
So many choices in the world. Some days it just feels like there are too many choices. In the information era we are in, we are exposed to so much, it is sometimes hard to make choices. Make them too quickly, regret them. Make them too slowly, miss the short window of opportunity. More and better information should help us make better decisions. The very object that gives us all the options, the computer, also holds the key to all the data which helps guide the decision making process. What a bout the gut instinct, or knot in the stomach we get, when we know something is a right or wrong choice. It seems more and more irrational to go against the data. Every day we play this hard balancing act as we work or play. I encounter this daily as I try and decide what will go in the store tomorrow, next week, even six months from now. We don't want to overwhelm you, yet we want to have selection. We want to excite you, but want to offer what is functional and familiar. We want to edit, but we don't want to eliminate the wrong pieces or colors. There are just so many options that our heads spin some days. We appreciate the trust you have in us each time you come in the store. We work hard to make what seem like good decisions on what to put in our stock..We look at price, functionality, brand perception, fit, and more in making a decision. We hope you continue to let us know what you think. We may not have everything you are looking for each time you shop, but know that we are listening to your fe edback and want your shopping experience with us to be as easy and enjoyable as possible. Thanks for continuing to have faith in our choices. Till Later, M
THE BLOG
MICHAEL
December 12, 2006
Ok, I skipped a day of the blog. Is it like the gym? Do you get a day off a week to rest the mind instead of the body? I really just could not write yesterday. This whole thing is new to me. I am not used to sharing my thoughts with people at large. I guess I do every day by people looking at what I buy for the store and then buying or not buying. I make mistakes all the time. I always say if I had a crystal ball I would be retired and on the beach. On the blog there is no black and white, j ust grey. I guess people could be critical by writing in, but so far I don't know if anyone is really reading this with the exception of my friend Jill. It is hard to come up with new and interesting things to write about each day. I wonder, is my life just too "normal" to have my own blog. No, I think, my life is definately not "normal" (whatever that means in this day and age). Maybe I need to try and read more, go to more movies, concerts, sports events, etc... Will this give me more to write about? This whole blog this is defintely uncharted territory for me. I really don't read anyone else's and don't know what the real meaning of one is supposed to be. Maybe a ghost writer is the answer? Probably a bad idea. I guess I will be in this quandundrum for a few weeks as I work into this "thing" I have created. Maybe just letting myself write about anything I feel at the moment I pick the blackberry up is the best way to do it. In any case, this is what I'm thinking about right now. In a few minutes on to the next thoughts and maybe tomorrow's blog entry. Till Later,
A BALMY SUNDAY
MICHAEL
December 10, 2006
It was a balmy December Sunday. Thanks to those of you who tore yourself away from the football games today to stop in. A Vikings win this Sunday. Another great game tonight. I am moving a bit slower tonight after a long week. Temple, from the owner of Azia, has opened in the former Tiburon location.. I will try and stop by this week and let you all know my thoughts. Azia is one of my favorite spots so I have hight hopes for this as well. They have saved the fish tank. I wondered what they were going to do with the fish. I am actually in town until early January. This is a long stretch for me. (and probably for my staff-lol). Maybe I will take in a few movies. I still have not seen Casino Royale. Moonraker with Roger Moore was my first encounter with the Bond franchise and I have been hooked since. Its about as close as I get to Science Fiction. Now you know that I never got into the Dungeons and Dragons thing growing up. Nothing against it, just not my thing. Any other film suggestions please let me know. We should be getting some more new arrivals this week. We just got a lot of new Men's G-Star which looks great. In women's we got a lot of new Michael Stars, which should come as no suprise. I am grabbing a bite, watching the New Orleans/Dallas game in the background and going to head home to do laundry. The stuff Sunday nights are made out of. Till Later, M
HOLIDAY PARTIES
MICHAEL
December 10, 2006
It's the season of get togethers, fesitivities, and holiday parties. I spent the day dressing many of you for events tonight, or last night I guess as I write this, and helping select gifts for the upcoming holidays. It is always rewarding to help someone find the right pieces to wear to a party or to help someone pick out what we hope is the perfect gift. This time of year also gives many of us a chance to see and catch up with family and friends that we don't see all the time. In my case, I attended my friend Mark's annual Holiday Party. I think it is in year 9 or 10 and I have only missed one to my knowledge. I not only saw him, but other friends as well, many of whom I have known for 20 years or longer. Maybe that's why even I got a new shirt for the evening. After catching up on all the births, career moves, and news, I learned about Second Life amongst other things. I hope many of you enjoyed the evening as much as I did. These events, shopping, Holidazzle, giving to those in need , or catching a Wolves, Wild, or Viking game are all just part of the Holiday Season. Over the next few weeks we hope you include us as part of your Holiday. Whether it is stopping by for a gift, a new pair of jeans, something to wear to an event, or just to say hello, we hope to see you soon. Don't forget we have amazing free gift wrap in the main store and, of course, all the best brands. Till Later, M
MATCH GAME
MICHAEL
December 09, 2006
I stayed at work till close and then hit my neighborhood spot, Monte Carlo, for a libation and some predictable fare. I guess you now gather l live in the Warehouse District of Mpls. It is amazing to see the development over the last few years of the riverfront area. I am especially excited about the new Lund's Northeast except that they close at 11pm I think. Too early in my world. Anyway, I just got home so I missed my new 10pm escape which is Match Game reruns on the Game Show Network. I am not sure if those of you who have cable get this network. I have Direct TV so it is one of the zillions of channels I get. For those of you too young to know, Match Game was an edgy game show from the early 70's with Brett Sommers, Charles Nelson-Reilley, Richard Dawson, and three rotating celebrity guests where they filled in the "blanks" so to speak. It is good diversion and good humor. Somehow it seems funny again. Its like fashion. Everything old seems new again every so many years in the cycl e. We put a lot of new stuff out today. Some new, some back again as it looks fresh, some basics. For those guys who are fans of the Couture shirts, they are back. Great for a night out on the town or just to put with jeans. For the ladies, lots of new Vince has arrived. We also just got some mens William Rast, which is Justin Timberlake's line. We have the Women's they fit great. I got a pair of the men's myself to go to the J.T. concert and William Rast show in LA a few weeks ago and they are gre at. J.T. is coming in Jan for a concert at Xcel Center is St. Paul. Let's show our support before the concert. We now believe our auto updates to the site are functioning. This means you can read it shortly after I write it. I am easing into this whole thing and it will adjust as we promote it a bit more and you all speak up about what you think. We have always been known to be the first to try something, so here we are. Will our competitors follow suit. Do they really have anything to say?? We wi ll wait and see. Tomorrow I will be off the an annual Holiday Party that I attend with a lot of my very tolerant friends. Tolerant because I am only around now and then as many of you know. I will write in maybe from the party. Maybe we will see some of you at the store this weekend. We have great free gift wrap and don't forget the outlet has lots of great stuff at 50 to 90 percent off and is at Southdale across from California Pizza Kitchen. Till Later, M
112 EATERY
MICHAEL
December 08, 2006
There is no better place to warm up on such a cold night. After waiting more than an hour in baggage claim and popping into the store to go through mail, I am stopping at 112 for a bite. A great glass of wine and some amazing food will cure my shock to the cold weather. You all might have noticed some of my posts are a few hours behind. We are working out some kinks. We think maybe its that I did not have subject headers to my entries. Now I have to title them all. Even more pressure to be c reative. Its like one of those brands that names their monthly deliveries. They come up with things like. "Winter's Moment", "Sand and Sea", Mystery Garden", and "Sunday Brunch.". I have always wondered who comes up with this titles. Does there always have to be a theme or inspiration. Can't it be just because they felt like it that day. Maybe I think about it too much. Isn't the product what really matters. Its like a movie with a great trailer but then the film is empty and disappointing. Back to the food though. Have all of you been to 112 Eatery. Definately worthy of all the accolades they have been given. A very warm and comfortable place as well. Someone asked if this is going to turn into restaurant reviews. I don't think Dara Moscowitz should worry. If you guys have holiday shopping to do we are there to help. Either call us or email us under Contact if you have questions. Don't forget to let us know what you think of the new lendruskin.com. We have more enhancements planned so give us your suggestions. Till Later, M

I am writing from the airport gate being hit with the harsh reality that I left my winter coat, gloves, scarf, and hat in my car at home so I did not have to deal with it in LA. So much for good ideas. It will be nice and cold for me when I arrive tonight I have no doubt. We will have a few new things on the floor tomorrow afternoon as a result of a hopefully productive trip. Its always more fun to see something new and different. We will also have some new arrivals at the outlet this weeken d. By the way, not to segway, but in case you are as confused as I am on how to get back to the home page on the website just click on the lendruskin icon on top. I kept going to the site map. Hmmm..... If you have trips planned to warm climates we have started getting in our resortwear for men and women. Its nice to see some color back in the store. Yes, some of you thought fall was dark. Isn't it supposed to be? I have purchased all the useful mags for the flight home- Us, Star, People, InStyle, and of course the Harvard Business Review. There is nothing like pulling that out and seeing the response from the person you are sitting next to after reading all the others. I guess I need to stay on top of the Hollywood scene and the trends, or try at least. If you are reading this so called "blog" let us know your feedback under Contact Us. Let me know what you want to know more or less of. Till Later, M

Lunchtime. Quick break at a definate hidden treasure in Little Tokyo in downtown LA. Sushi Gen has some of the freshest Sushi I have had. A bit tough to order as they have no menu, it is well worth it. I am not sure what they will give me except that it will be amazing. By the way I am sure those of you that have seen me in the last two weeks will be happy to know I will be coming back with no sideburns thanks to my favorite LA barbershop, Rudy's. There's nothing like a simple $15 buzz for tho se of us for whom styling is no longer a relevant concern. Off to Monarchy after lunch to see what else can possibly be done to a men's tee shirt. Now if I could only figure out where the buttons are to lower the roof on the rental convertable. Till Later, M

Well it's here. The official launch of the redesigned lendruskin.com. What better place to be writing from the first morning than beautiful L.A. It is a crisp, cool but sunny morning with highs headed to the 70's. I will take it. Thanks to our web team for making this all happen. I'm having breakfast at a fairly new spot in the area. I am at B.L.D. which stands for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. It is slightly more on the gourmet side than I usally go for breakfast but felt like their amazing blueberry ricotta pancakes with vermont maple syrup. With some french press coffee and fresh squeezed oj I should be good to go for the day. I hit Robertson yesterday after work and perused Kitson, Kitson Man, Lisa Kline, Lisa Kline Man, and Madison. I am happy to report that whatever I think they had that was relevant (as we say in retail which means we think you care enough about it for us to stock it) we have as well. No tossing and turning for a night or two at least. We have missed the next "big t hing" yet. By the way if you know what it will be or when it will come around let me know. Dinner last night at my favorite local Italian restaurant, Pane e Vino.. It's and wonderful casual place where the owner Rod is always around to make you feel at home. It also has a beautiful outdoor patio to enjoy a nice night. (And heat lamps in case its cold). A walk through Rande Gerber's new Stone Rose Lounge at the hotel to see what was happening and then an episode of Law and Order Criminal Intent closed th e night. Today it's back downtown to the mart area to look for some cool new jeans for the ladies and some new tees for the guys. I know, you all want something different but not too crazy. I will keep looking. If you want to write in and let us know if there are lines you want us to carry let us know. If it is not on my tried and failed list, my tried twice and failed list, the almost lost the shirt on my back list, the they are too difficult to deal list, or any of my other lists of no's, then I will take a look. As my associate Barbara likes to say "We have been to that Rodeo before" might apply. I any case I will have to sign off soon to get to work. Wll this be a morning ritual for me? Will it be whenever I have thoughts to share? Should this be more about clothes? I am really not sure. Tell me what you want to hear. Of course I run the risk you will say dump "Live with Michael" and you want to read nothing at all. In that case I guess I turn back to my rushed breakfast, my USA Today or Wall St. Journal, and my AM notes to my retail friends Jill, Marsha, Ken, Sherry, and Jackie who for now are going to see what you all see so my fingers don't degenrate from typing so much from these small keys. This comes from my Blackberry. Till Later, M
